Today we’d like to introduce you to Terry “Doc” Dockery, Ph.D.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Georgia native; born in Athens while my parents were at UGA and have lived in Americus, Broxton, Augusta, Brunswick, Savannah, and Atlanta.
Had a strange family–made me want to study Psychology.
Paid my way through college selling men’s clothes; very successful at it.
When I discovered there was a field called Industrial/Organizational Psychology (psychology applied to business settings) I knew it was for me.
Attended Louisiana State University to get my Ph.D. in I/O Psychology. Taught Shaquille O’Neal while he was there (he seems to have done okay). During this time also won the “Lucille Award” from blues legend BB King as a member of the best amateur blues band in the country.
Moved to Atlanta in 1993 and was a very successful consultant in a firm but on the road a lot.
Launched my business in 1997 to create a better work/personal balance.
Had 3 young children and was missing them growing up.
Part of my work is interviewing C-Suite candidates for new jobs or promotion; their biggest regret was not spending more time with their children when the children were young.
Launched my business and started coaching my two sons’ two little league baseball teams at the same time (fell asleep during practice one day).
Career and life mission are to help others have more fun, make more money, and do more good.
Have helped 6 businesses double their revenue without undue stress or risk, and three C-Suite executives double their self-confidence in less than a week.
Author of Amazon #1 Bestseller “Leadership, Happiness & Profit: 12 Steps to a High-Performance Business”
Added role of Program Director, CEO Roundtables, in collaboration with the Kennesaw State University Shore Entrepreneurship Center in 2016. Facilitate CEO peer groups that help each other have more fun, make more money, and do more good.
Currently mentoring the 3 finalists from the KSU Entrepreneurship Center’s KSU Top 100 contest for students which gives them 100K in cash and services to scale a business.
One of the students already has a 5M business and just graduated in May.
Widely known as a man who “puts the harm in harmonica.” Play in an Allman Brothers tribute band.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Very fulfilling overall. Biggest struggles are dealing with economic downturns being in the consulting business and attending to both marketing/sales and delivery of services as an independent consultant.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Business Psychology Company – what should we know?
Am most proud of helping others realize their dreams.
What sets us apart is achieving extraordinary results while having fun doing it.
What good does it do to have a lot of money if you’re not happy?
You want to be like Ebenezer Scrooge after the visits by the three ghosts; both rich and happy.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Primary career inspiration was my deceased mentor Gerry Donovan, M.D. He was a psychiatrist; was in his therapy group in Charleston, SC as I was making the transition from professional musician to graduate school.
He was a happy and effective professional who became my role model for my career.
He was particularly masterful at facilitating groups and helping people be happier.
He was also a gourmet cook, an Aikido master, a member of the symphony chorus, a motorcycle enthusiast, and the owner of a sailboat he kept in France.
Primary life inspiration is my wife Cindy; perhaps the happiest and most nurturing person I’ve ever known. I’ve learned a lot about living a happy life and what real success is from her.
