Meet Darrell Burke and Eric Wittgen of Bur-Witt Design in Chamblee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrell Burke and Eric Wittgen.

Darrell and Eric, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We purchased a vacation rental cabin in the Blue Ridge area and needed to furnish it.
We found some old furniture that was still in good condition but with out-of-style finishes. We painted and distressed them and got many compliments from guests. We decided then to paint some furniture and see if we could sell them. We rented a booth at Simple Finds Interiors & Antiques and Bur-Witt Design was born!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Actually, we’ve grown in a very slow and controlled pace. Because of this, we haven’t really had any struggles. The biggest challenge has been learning where to find vendors for unusual accessories to sell alongside our furniture. Some items we’ve purchased to sell didn’t sell but that’s helped us better define our selling lines and determine what our customers want.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bur-Witt Design – what should we know?
We specialize in offering our customers unusual furniture pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind and accessories that aren’t seen all over town. We take great pride in painting and finishing our furniture so that the finished pieces look like heirlooms that could be found in an old estate or country house in Europe. We also choose our accessories carefully. We mix vintage accessories with new pieces so that our customers are intrigued! All of our furniture and accessories mix well together so our customers can feel confident that what they purchase will look great in the room they are decorating.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Creativity is probably the characteristic we “use” most in our business. Being able to take old furniture and turn them into usable, stylish pieces that customers actually desire really makes us happy!
