Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Ramirez.
Julia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my YouTube channel during my Junior year in high school after learning the basics of editing in my Audio Video Tech & Film class, not thinking much of it and posting quite inconsistently. I eventually quit posting shortly after because I felt like I wasn’t good enough. Going into college, I found myself really growing as a person both physically and mentally. I began to not care what others thought about me, which led to me uploading videos on IGTV when the feature first came out on Instagram. I realized that I had a passion for creating content as I began to upload more and more on Instagram. It wasn’t until my Sophomore year in college when I admitted to myself that I wanted to begin posting consistently on YouTube, but was scared to come across as copying others and didn’t want to make the same type of content as every other college YouTuber. It took me some time to convince myself to finally go for it and to let go of any excuses I had.
I uploaded a “college school supplies shopping” vlog during the summer of 2019, which ended up going viral, reaching a current total of 851K views, causing my channel to immediately get approved for monetization. I continued to post more videos that summer and the following semester, which led to me gaining 10K subscribers. Since then, I have been uploading at least a video each week, I’ve worked with brands like Princess Polly & VS PINK, and I plan to continue posting on YouTube long term. Throughout this experience, I’ve learned that consistency is key, that you should stop getting in your own way of accomplishing your goals, and that you shouldn’t compare yourself to any other individual because you are a different person and you have different ideas to provide to people.
Has it been a smooth road?
There definitely have been struggles along the way. In high school, I struggled with having confidence in myself, which led to comparison and an unhealthy mindset. After overcoming that, my next challenge became improving on my video quality once I decided I wanted to go full force with YouTube. This led to me getting a summer job working in retail in order to be able to invest in the Canon G7X vlogging camera. As for now, my current challenge is making sure that I have a balanced life when it comes to my college course load, YouTube, social life, and health. It’s not easy, but I love keeping myself busy and challenging myself.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is that I want to create a genuine connection with my followers and subscribers. I want them to see me as a friend or as someone that they feel comfortable enough to ask questions and learn new things from. I’m constantly asking them for feedback or for video ideas that they would like to see from me. Another thing that sets me apart is that I’m always hungry for more in terms of my passions. I’m always looking for new ways to improve on my content and I try to spread out across several social media platforms including Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, and YouTube.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like YouTube is something that can be done pretty much anywhere. That’s definitely one of the huge benefits about it. I will admit though, after visiting California over the summer, I realized why most YouTubers do end up moving over there once they’ve grown a large audience. The climate is pretty much perfect and there is really so much over there that people can make content out of. Atlanta does have a few downfalls in terms of the sometimes unpredictable weather and how far we may need to drive to get content at somewhere like the beach, but having a YouTube channel in Georgia is definitely manageable even if it takes a bit more creativity to create content. Plus I guess you can say our traffic isn’t as bad as LA, so that’s a benefit too!!
