Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcia Chewe Ward.
Marcia, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad in 2000, I became inspired to get my real estate license. So, in January 2001, I enrolled in a real estate class to earn my real estate license. It was also during this time I discovered I was pregnant with my youngest child. After earning my real estate license, I worked part-time in the real estate industry while teaching school. During the early 2000s, much of my time was focused on raising my children and working full time. In 2006, I divorced and became a single mother of three. It was also during this time, I was determined and vehemently focused on raising successful, healthy and happy children (which I am happy and thankful to say I did). Therefore, my time and energy were spent primarily between my children and my full-time career in education. Fast forward to 2015, when my oldest child graduated from college and my second child graduated from high school, I began to reflect on my role as a parent and my yearning to do more in terms of making a positive impact globally. As time progressed, I began to see a great need in the real estate industry for professionalism, an authentic willingness to provide solutions and the lack of skilled customer service to clients. So, I began to ask God what is it that you would have me to do? What are my next steps? In 2017, I heard and answered what God was urging me to pursue, which was to take a leap of faith and dive into real estate full time. This was not an easy decision. One Sunday morning as I was preparing to go to church, I was in the shower asking God, are you sure this is what I should do right now? I remember thinking and saying, really God, now? I have three children, one of which was in college at that time. I definitely received my answer and confirmation when I attended church that morning because the entire sermon was about, if God is calling you to do something, simply do it because he will allow provision for the vision. I was genuinely concerned about being able to provide financially for my children. However, this decision was bigger than me. This decision was me being obedient. This was a calling for me and thus far, the best calling I have answered, because in 2018 I decided to pursue my Real Estate Broker’s license. Additionally, in 2019 I opened my real estate brokerage company, EMM Real Estate Services, with the purpose of servicing clients by providing an amazing buying or selling experience. Again, this was the best calling I have answered because building a business is two folds. It allows me to provide a much-needed service in the industry and it allows me to make a positive impact and legacy for my lineage. Hence the name of my brokerage are my children’s initials. It is my goal, my hope and plans that EMM Real Estate Services will continue grow and my children and their children will build the business to further heights to make a global impact.
Has it been a smooth road?
There are always challenges, but the benefits outweigh the challenges when you are doing what you are called to do. The biggest challenges for me were at the beginning, not knowing what to do as a startup company. So, I began educating myself about starting a brokerage. Though I believe I am inherently an entrepreneur, in that I have always had the spirit of entrepreneurship within me, but I wasn’t fully aware of it. Another personal challenge for me was the shifting in adjusting to the logistics of being self-employed, such as managing health insurance and varied other benefits of being employed.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the EMM Real Estate Services story. Tell us more about the business.
My brokerage provides a range of varied real estate services to current homeowners, buyers, investors and corporate employees. Our attention to detail and exemplary customer service is what sets us apart from other broker companies. We pride ourselves on providing solutions to what are often challenges for our clients. We go above and beyond in serving our clients. We are more than real estate transactions; we are advocates and skilled negotiators that work on behalf of our clients with keen fidelity.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, the industry will change in a few ways. One of which I believe is how technology will impact the real estate industry. I really see the industry becoming more aligned to tech-savvy devices that streamline the process for homeowners and buyers. Moreover, with the major concern of Covid19, everyone will be in search of processes and products that will make their search or home sale more user friendly and the least intrusive.
