Today we’d like to introduce you to Autumn Jeannette.
So, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began making music professionally back in 2013 when I was fourteen years old. I auditioned for the popular Atlanta-based girl group WeRCharm and was chosen to become a member of the group. This is where my journey into the music industry began.
As a member of the WeRCharm from 2013-2016, I experienced the music industry like never before and enjoyed many great experiences that helped shape and mold me into the artist I am today. I was able to write or co-write many of the group’s songs and hone my craft as a lyricist. I learned about music production and sound engineering from some of the best producers and engineers in Atlanta. While in the group, we performed as an opening act for the boy-band, Mindless Behavior, and toured to different states for performances. I was also able to meet some music industry icons such as Timbaland, Jazze Pha and Teddy Riley. Unfortunately, the group split up. It was the end of an iconic era of girl groups forming in Atlanta.
After the group, I took a year off from music to focus on school. During this year, I took the time to explore music in a different light. I auditioned for the my high school’s spring musical, The Pajama Game, and was cast in the female lead role of “Babe Williams”. Upon graduating from Chamblee High School in Spring 2017, I was accepted to the mecca, Howard University, in Washington, D.C., on a full academic scholarship. I didn’t want to leave my dreams and passions behind, so I started making music as a solo artist. I can remember sitting at the dining room table, using bare minimum equipment with my friend, artist and producer CobyCa$h. It was at that table where I first recorded my song, “Birthday”. I’m passionate about singing, but I’m also extremely passionate about songwriting. To date, I’ve written the lyrics to all of the music I’ve released. I had to hustle to make it happen on my own. I’m also lucky to have the support of my parents.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t been perfect, but it’s definitely been worth it. Although I’ve faced certain struggles along my journey, each obstacle has taught me valuable lessons. For one, starting over as a solo artist is a huge challenge. On top of that, I had to learn how to balance my two worlds: being a recording artist and being a full-time college student. I’ve learned how to be self-sufficient, invest in myself, and most importantly, make valuable connections. Without a network of people around you who want to see you succeed and vice versa, it’s a difficult road to travel. I’ve also learned how to take risks. There’ve been times when I knew I had to go against the grain and bet on myself. Without taking those risks, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a singer, songwriter and performer. I would categorize myself as an R&B/Soul and Pop artist. However, I like to write music for all genres.
Once I got acclimated to college, I released my first single entitled, “I MISS U”, featuring VonDon on Soundcloud in July of 2018. The response was great, which built momentum for my first EP release entitled, “XOXO,” the following October. “XOXO” gained most of its notoriety through my singles “Birthday” and “Dangerous.”
A year later, I released my most recent EP, “Libra, Vol. 1”. There’s a song on “Libra, Vol. 1” for every occasion, whether you want to chill (“I Want To feat. VonDon”), dance (“Back It Up feat. Eric IV”) or simply have fun (“On Lock”). The most popular songs on the EP are “Boujee” and “Attraction”, but my personal favorite is “Slow.” It’s a vibe and it’s just downright sexy.
I normally write music based off of my experiences or the experiences of the people close to me. Life is such a beautiful thing, and the ups and downs are what inspire me the most.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Music video shoots are always a lot of fun, but my proudest moment so far has been performing at Howard University’s Student Choice Awards, headlined by Megan Thee Stallion. I was nominated for best artist by my peers and performed for a crowd of over 1,500 people for the first time as a solo artist. I was informed just three days before the show that I would be performing. I prepared and choreographed the performance in three days, with the help of my classmates / dancers. My friend and talented rapper, VonDon, came to D.C. to perform “Fairytale” with me. “Fairytale”is my most popular song to date. The show was a success. It’s always dope to hear the crowd singing along. It’s moments like this that are truly unforgettable.
I’m looking forward to releasing a few singles this summer in advance of my upcoming EP, ”Libra, Vol. 2”, which will be released in Fall 2020. I’m also excited to be graduating from Howard University in Spring of 2021 with a degree in Media, Journalism and Film and a Business Administration minor.
