Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Magnier.
Tyler, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Tokyo and spent my childhood and teenage years in Beijing and New Delhi before going to Boston, where I studied photography at Tufts University. After a year, I transferred to the Savannah College of Art & Design in Atlanta and completed my degree in photography and minor in business management. I have been interested in photography since middle school, where I took a variety of photo classes from darkroom photography to studio lighting. I did the same in high school as well.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve had some doubts about going into photography and some friends said that “I won’t make any money in that profession”, but I am very grateful for the art teachers I had throughout the years that put me in the right direction and for I am grateful for friends who have supported me along the way.
My parents also had doubts about going into photography, but have been very supportive, especially when I went into higher education. When I came to SCAD Atlanta, I made friends who were studying interior design, fashion design, animation, etc. (other than the photography, of course) and it was an instant inspiration boost for me.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I currently specialize in street, travel, and portrait photography. It is hard for me to choose one area of photography to focus on, but all three of these have a common theme that brings them all together: the use of natural light and the outdoors. I love experimenting with how light creates unique shadows and how it hits certain objects. I also very rarely use artificial/studio lighting.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I might have gone into advertising or interior design, as I have a passion for those fields too.
