Meet Desiah Barnett of Destined Productions in Decatur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiah Barnett.

Desiah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Desiah Barnett. I am a Music Producer. I also songwriter, DJ, and study law. My producer’s name is Destined. I discovered my musical talent at the age of eight years old. I started using FL Studio and making beats when I moved to Decatur, GA. At the age of 14, I went into foster care and I told myself that it was imperative that I live my dreams. I was home with my two kids on a summer day and I notice Chris Jones from Atlantic Records and Royce Monroe from Generation Now on Instagram doing music reviews. I asked if there were any internships and I reached out to Chris Jones and ended up interning at Mean Street Studios home to DJ Drama Generation Now and Atlantic Records. I had the pleasure of working and networking events for billboard artist like Lil Boosie, Blac Youngsta, and more. I even got to decorate the Nipsey Hussle album release party. I was so excited! Recently I just dropped a single called Times Up produced by Gabegotbeats from Street Execs and I have another single I’m dropping featuring Fire n’ ice called Hold Up produced by me. My goal is to finish my Law studies and become an entertainment lawyer to help others who share my same talent but don’t know the legal side of the music business.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I was in foster care and growing up, I hung around my friends who made beats and they taught me all that I know now. I didn’t get to stay at home like most producer stories you here. I had to pick my talent and skill back up and believe that I was just as good as some of these dudes that are super talented. I’m a single mom, so I save my money for studio sessions and I would move to hopefully do the same for more women who produce and have circumstances.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in executive producing albums and mixtapes. I gather producers and help them get placements. I also help producers and songwriters set up BMI ASCAP and distribution processes. I also offer arrangements services as well.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I love Atlanta because I moved here to East Atlanta at the age of ten from New York. I definitely got my sound from Atlanta. I can catch the same drip and sound they have here because I grew up here and I know the vibe. Atlanta is a Mecca for Hip Hop and I’m blessed to have Walked this journey alongside successful producers who have invested time and drumkits towards my career.
