Meet Chi Chi Okezie of SIMPLEnetworking

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chi Chi Okezie.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Before I launched SIMPLEnetworking in 2006, I was a freelance translator. I did short document translations, transcribing and interpretations in English and French. I had the opportunity to do videos, reports and stories for CNN International, The French American Chamber of Commerce, The Consulate General of France and other agencies in Atlanta and abroad including Cleanis (French manufacturer of hygiene products).

Although, I enjoyed translating it did not give me a chance to be creative. So, I started teaching evening French and business classes at Georgia Tech through their Options Program. It was fascinating and fun to create my own curriculum, add interactive touch points and learn and develop along with the students (undergrad, grad, post doc, alums and business professionals). I was especially intrigued with the international students and diversity of my class composition. In the process of teaching French and freelancing, I learned a lot about networking, building relationships and cultural awareness. This prompted me to start SIMPLEnetworking, where I would teach the art of networking, diversity and cultural awareness through seminars, workshops, events and consulting. That’s it – C’est tout – The rest is history!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Switching over from translating to business consulting was a bumpy start. I had to focus more on client relations, developing content and training material as well as branding my company. At this particular time, social media was taking off in a mighty way. I took workshops, attended conferences and read various resources to gain understanding and become an expert. I also had some difficulty determining my target markets.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the SIMPLEnetworking story. Tell us more about the business.
