Meet Dekalb County Makeup and Hair Artist: Erica Ruiz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Ruiz.

Erica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, first off I was born and raised in Southern California. I’ve always had a love for horror movies and special makeup effects ever since I was a young child. I was infatuated with all the awesome effects and gore make ups. In 2010 I tried making my dreams into a reality by enrolling in a Make-up school called Elegance International in Los Angeles, CA. There, I learned everything from beauty to special Make-up effects. After graduating I began to work in the independent film industry as a Professional Make-up artist where I worked on various short, indie, commercials, Music Videos, and even a featured film. As I continued to work in the makeup industry I discovered a passion and drive for The art of hair. So I pursued my passion and attended cosmetology school where I then received my license. After that, I decided to start a new chapter in my life and move to Atlanta, GA in November of 2015. Which brings me to now where I am working behind the chair as stylists and colorist at Salon Red in Atlanta, GA and loving it!! I still continue with my passion for effects make-up but now I have another talent to add to my belt.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not always been a smooth road. It took a lot of hard work and dedication to get to where I am now and I’m still learning more and more every single day. I wouldn’t change anything about it.

Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
I was extremely quiet and always kept to myself. My twin sister was my best friend. Lol. My interests were watching movies and wanting to do special effects makeup, hanging with friends, listening to music, and going to hardcore shows.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
I would have to say my favorite childhood memory would have to be our family trips to Mexico.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future- I see myself still being behind the chair at a salon and still working freelance as a Special Make-up effects artists. Also, I hope to get back into the film Industry here.
