Meet East Atlanta Special Effects, Nails, and Makeup Artist: Brittany Rochelle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Rochelle.

Brittany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been an artist all my life. That’s something my late father passed down to me. As I got older, I knew that my career would be something professional yet artistic. I started experimenting. I went down the rabbit hole of high fashion modeling and stumbled across makeup and at 19, I was a self-proclaimed makeup artist. Honestly, I hadn’t worn much makeup before then but once you know brushes and art techniques, you can pretty much create anything. After doing my very first face, I knew I had something special. It felt as right as breathing. I looked up creature creators and other fx artists and fell in love. From then on I knew I would be a beauty professional. But not the typical one.

I wanted the special power to be able to turn a glam princess into a magical monster. I didn’t want to be known to be the stereotypical MUA that just worked in a mall kiosk or spa. Mind you there’s nothing wrong with that path but I wanted to be a powerhouse that’s sought after because I’m so well rounded and creative. So the race to become my personal best began! Even though I knew what I wanted to do, I still went to school, both university for Art/Marketing and technical for nails (still working on finishing my marketing degree). And I’m working to expand my brand, Beauty from Venus, deeper into the beauty professional world as a staple, not just a name. My father passed away 2011 and I made a promise to him to take control of my future so it’s kind of an ode to him to stay true to myself. So keep an eye out for Beauty from Venus! There’s A LOT to come.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been an easy road at all. In my childhood, we moved around a lot. Originally I’m from Leonardtown, Maryland by way of Piney Point. We moved to Augusta and from there east Atlanta. After my little sister was born we moved to quaint little Covington, GA to get away from the crime and violence of Dekalb County. And to be honest, my parents didn’t support a creative career. My mom’s family was military and even she had worked for the CIA on their satellites since she was 18. My dad on the other had was a bit of a rebel. But he wanted more for me so originally they sent me to university for Psychology. That lasted a semester lol. And when I decided to follow my heart, it meant I needed to fund that dream myself as well. So needless to say, I’m more than financially invested in my dreams lol. I’ve sacrificed everything to make them come true.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
Atlanta is SATURATED with beauty professionals and to be recognized for trying to take it in a different direction feels so amazing.

Tell us more about the struggles you’ve faced along the way.
Yes. I’m still struggling. Lol. it’s hard to get people on the bandwagon when you’re different. Every day, I struggle with whether I’m on the right path but it’s one of those things where I have to trust my heart.

Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for professionals like you?
Atlanta is PERFECT for creatives. It’s a quirky city full of slightly awkward but passionate, intelligent people. Anyone in any lane can come here and pave a path for themselves.
