Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Toulon.
Justin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been interested in being a film editor since the age of 12. My parents bought me my first camera and editing software and my interest grew from there. I attended LIU-Post and received my B.F.A. in Fine Arts with a concentration in Film Editing. In 2011, I started a Production company in New York called Laconic Productions with my business partner James Newman where we filmed and edited films, web series, and music videos. This venture caused a shift from just editing video, to filming as well. I received my M.B.A. from Dowling College in 2013. From 2012 to 2014 I worked for the top syndicated news show “Inside Edition” as a Junior Editor, and in July 2014 I relocated to Atlanta. After arriving in Atlanta I hit the ground running and started getting hired for filming and editing various web series’, many music videos and films. I began adding photography to my repertoire and it is something that I am becoming equally passionate about along with filming and editing. My skills in all 3 of these areas are constantly growing through experience and I plan on continuing to provide great work for my clients as well as maintaining a unique vision in all my work.
Has it been a smooth road?
The most difficult part in this industry is finding work or finding someone who will take a chance on you when you are just building your experiences. Moving to Atlanta was a quite a transition as I didn’t know anyone here and needed to basically start from the beginning to get to know people.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment so far is completing my first feature film which I executive produced, filmed, and edited. The film, “The Plug” had a successful premiere and my team and I are moving onward and upward to keep creating high-quality content.
Were there moments when you had to struggle?
The hardest part of working independently is finding work. It’s often difficult to find new projects as well as meaningful projects that you can dive into and bring the best of what you can do. Also adapting to constant technological advances especially when requested by a client can be a struggle.
What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
I always recommend Atlanta as a place to build yourself within the entertainment industry. I have found more work in Atlanta in 2 years than my 5 years operating the same company in New York. Aside from the film industry being very apparent here, the independent market is huge and its a great place for independent filmmakers.
