Meet Cza Kalu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cza Kalu.

Chika Iloegbunam, better known as Cza Kalu, is an artist who uses music to hit the soul. He was exposed to music at an early age, hearing oldies and African music that his parents loved. Born from Nigerian parents, Cza was raised in Queens, New York. Early influences during his childhood included 2Pac, Aaliyah, 50 Cent, Lauryn Hill and Michael Jackson. At age 12, he moved to Georgia, where he developed a diverse taste in music. His main influences shifted to Kid Cudi, Fela Kuti, Wale, Kanye West and Paramore. After hearing Chance the Rapper’s Acid Rap mixtape and learning about being an independent artist, he decided to pursue music seriously. His first performance was at Georgia State University’s Unity Ball in 2013. This was followed by his next significant show at Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta. Since then, Cza has been constantly working to develop as an artist and create music that spreads love, builds confidence and inspires people. After graduating from Georgia State University, he spent a year working on his debut EP, Forever Atlanta, and released a second EP the same year. His debut album, Everclear, released on June 19, 2020. The album’s lead single, “Blackberry”, was released the same day to celebrate Juneteenth. With his mix of hip-hop, dark trap, and soul, Cza Kalu shows that he is more than a songwriter. His vibrant sounds and versatile creativity transcend the traditional rules of hip-hop.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been smooth. Of course, everyone goes through ups and downs in life. There were various times that I doubted whether or not I could fully pursue music as a career. There were times when some of the music I put out was not well received or did not garner enough attention. But my faith, family, and friends have motivated to keep pushing and continue to elevate as an artist.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Cza Kalu is my artist’s name/entity. I am part of a group of creatives called Madeislife. I specialize in songwriting, performing, and vocals. I am most proud of the first sold-out show we performed at in 2016. We opened up for Azizi Gibson in Atlanta, and we put on a high-energy, well-executed performance for the crowd. What sets me apart from others is my diverse influences and artistry. I listen to all types of music, solely if it inspires me in some way or makes me want to dance. When I write songs, I never restrict the lyrics to a certain genre. My goal is to hit the soul or inspire people. I approach every song with the intention to give people a vibe that sticks with them and makes them want to hear the song over and over.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would have invested most of my money towards music and not on things that weren’t aligned with my major goals. In order to thrive as an independent artist, you have to be willing to invest in your music and your brand. I would have used my money a lot wiser if I could start over.
