Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Miller.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Not many know that I have a degree in Fashion Design. Upon graduating, I wasn’t feeling the love for it anymore and ended up launching my Real Estate Appraisal Firm. Random…right? After the market declined in 2010, I had to make the hard decision to close the firm after 13 years in business. A position managing a local boutique presented itself at the right time. This renewed my passion for fashion! I enjoyed my time there and loved our customers, however, it was time for me to create my own path in this fashion space. So in February 2020, IAmDaniJay was birthed. I started out as an online boutique which was appropriate for the times we are in but I found a quaint space in Old Fourth Ward where clients can come and shop (by appointment only). It’s a one woman show over here (buying, selling, modeling, photographer, etc.), but it has been an experience I appreciate every day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Once I decided I was really going to do this, I moved out of my townhome and took over my sister’s entire basement with inventory. So long story short, amid the COVID-19 Pandemic, my sister kicked me out of the house! (Yes, we still love each other because that had to be the best thing that has happened for both of us). I was forced to be uncomfortable and grow. I went from needing to save as much money as I could to having to spend more money than I thought I had. Things always seem to work themselves out. I DID IT!!!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about IAmDaniJay – what should we know?
IAmDaniJay is the physical idea that it is not necessary to have a specific “style”. I specialize in Women’s Daily Wear but I’m known for my hands on approach to styling. You don’t just buy and wear a top, I want to show you how to WEAR a top! I fix, move, and adjust clothing to show styling techniques while showing how to accentuate the body. Oh and I’m a hat girl! I will style anything with a hat.
What sets me apart is knowing a woman’s body and being honest when something doesn’t fit right. It’s never just about a sale. I’m most proud of my reputation and customer service. My clients know I love them to death, we’re like family. The amount of support they show me is unmeasurable.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Having managed a boutique for several years, I am grateful for the valuable knowledge I gained buying, selling, and styling. I learned all the “behind the scenes ” of running a boutique. My two sisters are my cheerleaders! I received the biggest push from the both of them urging me to use my talents to control my own destiny.
