Meet Head Baker at GorJess Cupcakes, Jessica Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Brown.

Jessica, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, raised in Texas and proudly served in the U.S. Army. As a veteran, I was given the opportunity to work and travel overseas for seven years. During that time, I visited 11 countries and I was able to experience foods from all over the world. Shortly after, my curiosity for eating delicious foods became my passion for cooking it. GorJess Cupcakes was created in an office environment in Bagram, Afghanistan. Working long hours seven days a week was exhausting and I knew I needed an outlet. I decided to order a conventional oven, basic baking tools and ingredients and let the magic happen. It turned out. I was pretty good at baking with the limitations of being in a combat zone. Working in another country would often time lead to my family and friends forgetting about me. I knew that if this was happening to me, then it was surely happening to my co-workers. So, my goal was simple. I wanted to add a little bit of happiness to someone’s day through cupcakes.

Has it been a smooth road?
Man! It hasn’t been the smoothest road to travel but it’s my own lane and I take pleasure in the rewards that come with taking the path less traveled. Baking is no easy feat. It’s definitely a science and learning that on my own was well worth it. My transition from Afghanistan to Atlanta wasn’t easy. Most times, I battled with myself and not really knowing if anyone outside of Bagram would love my cupcakes but with the love and support of my husband, I broke free of those chains. Learning to manage my own business while being a full-time culinary arts student has taken a lot of time, patience and dedication but with every level, there’s a lesson and a reward.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
As an aspiring chef, I believe in the quality of my cupcakes over the quantity sold. It sounds corny but what sets my cupcakes in a jar apart from others is the time, love and care I place into every batch of cake and every box being shipped. Before I launched GorJess Cupcakes, I tried out some of the competition and I just wasn’t impressed. That’s when I knew I had to do this. Every order is freshly baked from scratch and every recipe has been tweaked to make your taste buds dance. GorJess Cupcakes also welcomes special request flavors because we want every one of our customers to enjoy their favorite cakes from us. We truly just want to inflict love and happiness through our cupcakes in a jar.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I do think that Atlanta is great for businesses like mine. There’s so much talent here and people are not afraid to stand out and share their passions with the city. Atlanta is known for becoming a significant hub for large corporations and their headquarters. For me, that’s my indication that growth is welcome here and I would recommend anyone to start their business here. The only downside that I’ve noticed about being here is that a lot of businesses come off as pretentious and in turn, it leads to terrible customer service. I never want to be that business. It’s one thing to charge slightly for your product or service and it’s another to not include the customer service that the customers deserve.
