Today we’d like to introduce you to Clint Luckett.
Clint, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Harrisburg, PA and moved to Jackson, MS when I was seven years old. I was raised on the Northside of town. I go by the name A.Luck. I am an artist/songwriter and owner of music entertainment company Level 7 Ent. A.Luck is my middle initial and my last name. My middle name is Amir and my last name is Luckett.
Amir means “prince” so I wanted to make that part of my stage name to remind me that I have to hold myself to a higher standard. I can’t do things the way everybody else does things because I’m not like everybody else. I’ve always been around music. My mom is a music teacher and plays piano. I was always singing with her at the piano bench. I was in choir, I did plays in high school. Me, one of my homeboys and my godbrother even had a singing group in high school called “Majestic.” I would sing and play piano. I don’t play much piano these days though.
I never really thought much about making music until I went to college and started rapping with some friends there. We made a name for ourselves back then but I didn’t really feel comfortable with the type of music we were making at the time. It felt like I wasn’t truly being myself. It wasn’t until I listened to Kanye West’s “College Dropout” that things started to make sense. I went to catholic school. I wasn’t in the streets like that but everything that I listened to rap-wise was real street and rugged. When I heard Kanye, it felt like a breathe of fresh air because I had finally found somebody I could identify with. At that moment, I felt like I could carve a lane out for myself musically if I really wanted to. I was more into production and songwriting anyway. So the time I spent rapping with my friends was me honing my skills, learning song structure, and figuring out who I was as an artist.
After college, I moved to Atlanta to be closer to the music scene and more opportunity for everything as a whole. I was linked up with my guy and then production partner Nathan Mayes through a mutual friend of ours. We started working, making beats and writing songs together. Dude is a genius to me. I learned so much from him in that time about sound, mixing, music terminology, song structure, and just the music industry as a whole. Our production team name was New Ethos. Once I started moving more as an artist, I didn’t have as much time to make beats, so a lot of our work has been put on hold. I know we will get to it when the time is right.
Around 2016, one of my friends (my current business partner, who will remain nameless because he doesn’t like the spotlight) came to me and basically put me in the studio. He had been trying to get me to be an artist for a while but it wasn’t my thing. I was looking to primarily write and produce. I didn’t want to be on stage but I didn’t have a network of people to sell my songs to. He came to me and told me I had too much talent and I was wasting it and not putting resources behind myself correctly. He took me to the studio and paid for me to record 4-hour recording sessions two days a week for two months straight. He paid all of that out his own pocket! He introduced me to one of the best engineers I’ve ever worked and still work with to this day named Florian Ongonga. That was the first time someone other than my parents invested money in my talent. He and I became partners and started investing in the music together. In 2017, I recorded a song called “Saucy” and people were digging it! I started working with a promoter in Atlanta by the name of P.Brown. She took me all over the city performing the song. Anywhere you can name in Atlanta, I’ve probably been there. I really felt like things were taking off when I got booked at SXSW in Austin, TX in 2018, The Real Music Festival in Anaheim, CA, and I opened up for Polo G at Center Stage in Atlanta, GA. I knew then that this could be something. Saucy changed my life.
I haven’t released a solo project just yet but I will very soon. I have a good number of singles streaming on all platforms. I release a new track called “OJ” on Friday 7/31/2020. It is currently on all platforms as well so please go download and share. I plan to continue putting out music and building my industry relationships. Ultimately, I will have a music production company that employs several writers and producers to take on projects for artists big and small. Songwriting is my true passion so I have to do what is necessary to expand that side of my business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I can’t say it has been a smooth road at all. Moving to Atlanta was necessary but it was tough navigating the city at first. You don’t know anybody and you don’t know who to trust. Atlanta is a big city but it small at the same time. Most people in the industry know each other and many grew up together. Their bonds were established early. They don’t know you so they don’t trust you. It’s tough to build credibility but it’s very easy to lose it. I’ve lost money and relationships. To me, it was hard but necessary. If I had not taking those losses, I wouldn’t have learned those lessons. I learned that those relationships would have ended anyway because we didn’t have the same mindset. I was being prepared for the success I was seeking. So I look at it all as a blessing.
Level 7 Ent – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As an artist, I specialize in making honest music that everyone can relate to. My goal is to be “unique but familiar.” I want it to be different but something people can vibe to naturally. I am most proud of the motivation I give people to follow their dreams. I didn’t know anyone in the industry. I don’t come from money. I just decided to do something and consistently worked at it. What sets me apart from everyone else is that nobody can do me better than me. I’ve embraced what I’m good at and I just strive to be the best version of myself everyday. What I am most proud of my with my company is the increase of clients we are getting. It’s all a blessing. I’m thankful for growth. What sets my company apart from others is our response time. We get songs back to you when we say we will and sometimes earlier. At Level 7 Ent., timeliness is important to us. As an artist, I deal with all types of companies. I definitely notice a lack of integrity when it comes to finishing projects in a timely manner in the entertainment world. We strive to change that mentality as much as possible.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally describe success as setting a goal and finishing it no matter what. A goal without a plan is just a wish. Sit down, plan it out, and execute. You either want it or you don’t. It has nothing to do with riches or status. If you say you want something, go get it. Period. When you accomplish whatever you set out to achieve, to me, that is success!
