Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Jackson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Katie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was an Interior Designer at a small boutique firm call Leigh Stuart Interiors in Atlanta for 13 years before moving to the mountains of NC. I moved to a beautiful mountain town outside of Asheville and started an Interior Design department for a well-established architecture firm call PLATT. We mainly focus on high-end residential homes. Platt offers design, construction, interior design and we are now opening a boutique showroom called PLATT Home here in Brevard.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a really cool journey. I got into this business because I was good at sewing. A neighbor in college in my apartment in Atlanta was an Interior Designer and found out I could sew. She enlisted my help for making a fabric canopy bed cover for a home she was designing up in Highlands North Carolina. That event started my career. I began making pillows and draperies for Interior Designers through college. When I graduated, I went to work in Admin at Leigh Stuart Interiors. I quickly moved into the office manager and design consultant. I worked with her for ten years learning everything about the trade and designing for high-end residential clients. I moved to Western North Carolina in 2014. I met with PLATT an architecture firm that had a client that wanted Full-Service Interior Design. I took that job which led me to start the Interior Design department for the company where I am the full-time Design Director. We now offer Interior Design as one of our services here at Platt. Our design team now runs about 10-15 Interior Design projects a year. We are now expanding our brand and are opening a boutique furniture and accessories showroom called Platt Home.
Please tell us about Platt Home.
We are a full-service Interior Design firm. We start projects with the clients and architects at the inception of the project. We work hard to find out the style and goals for each client and work to create a truly personal and beautiful home. We specialize in full-service which means everything from design details in the client’s architecture to furnishings, draperies, and art all the way down to place settings and linens. We specialize in creating a home that clients can immediately live in once construction is complete, which requires working with them throughout the entire process of design and construction.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My mom would let me redecorate my room nearly every year. We would pick paint colors and paint it ourselves and then we would get new bedding and she taught me how to sew window treatments. She made it so easy and fun to create a space to enjoy. I still do that today, just on a much grander scale. I let my own two daughters do the same thing. Who knows if it will lead them to a career in Design but they both really enjoy the process.
