Meet Xavier Peoples of HBCU Change

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xavier Peoples.

Xavier, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I created HBCU Change because colleges and universities, no matter how big or small, have issues engaging alumni in a meaningful way to give back to their school on a consistent basis. This app makes it easy for alumni and supporters to give back. You give without even thinking about it.

Has it been a smooth road?
Our goal is to raise one billion dollars over the next five years. The road has not been smooth because everyone doesn’t believe in the vision. Some say that this is not possible. But I believe in HBCUs and more importantly, I believe in their alumni and supporters. The hard part about this endeavor is the day to day grind… literally 50-100 calls a day.

We’d love to hear more about HBCU Change.
HBCUChange is an interactive philanthropic experience with the mission of raising $1 billion dollars for HBCUs over the next five years. HBCUChange takes the change from every purchase you make and automatically donates it to the HBCU of your choice so you can support historically black colleges and universities without even thinking about it.

These donations provide revenue that is predictable and essential to endowments and operating budgets for HBCUs. It allows them to spend less time focused on fundraising. They are free to think further ahead, take bigger risks, and make a bigger impact.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is the best city in the world for a business like HBCU Change. We are a black FinTech Company, in the home of the Atlanta University Center. There are so many resources and support in Atlanta for HBCU Change.

Pricing:

  • So you’ve downloaded HBCUChange. Now what? When you sign up, you link your credit or debit card to your account. Whenever you make a purchase, we will automatically round up the total to the nearest dollar and donate the change to the HBCU of your choice. Let’s say your favorite salad costs $6.75. HBCUChange rounds that purchase to $7.00. That 25 cents is called a round up. When your round-ups reach $5.00, HBCUChange automatically transfers that amount from your checking account to your HBCUChange account and donates that money to the HBCU of your choice.
