Meet Amanda Mohs of Amanda Mohs Fine Art in Smyrna

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Mohs.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been doing art all my life, I was one of the lucky ones to inherit creative genes. I took art classes throughout my life at school and graduated with a BFA from the University of Georgia. I am always curious about trying something new in art and finding new inspiration.

I think the apex for my current abstract painting style came from seeing others paint in that style online a few years ago. Then I started saving lots of inspirational ideas and watching videos of others processes. From there I started experimenting on my own. I made a lot of mistakes, tried a lot of different materials and mediums.

As I started to make more and more paintings, I shared them with friends and family who were really encouraging of my work. I kept on making them and adapting my materials to try new ideas, colors, and techniques.

We got this great original artwork on handmade paper while visiting Playa del Carmen in Mexico and decided to get it framed. Went to this place down the road a bit from where we live and just so happened that framer had a great local artist gallery in their store, Gallery 23Ten. I showed them some of my work and they were really interested. From there, I brought them some pieces in person and they decided to show and sell them at the gallery.

Figured if I was going to be a professional artist in a gallery that I should market myself and make it a full business. I got my brother to take beautiful photos of my work and since I have a background in digital design so I made myself a personalized website online to showcase my artwork – AmandaMohs.com. I just recently got into the Jonquil Fall Festival in Smyrna. This will be my first time having a booth and I’ve been working on getting prints of my work.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Art is always an experimentation but through that process there’s a lot of learning what works and what doesn’t work. Sometimes you find some really cool material or technique that adds to your work and other times you find something that completely ruins it. I’ve recently been experimenting more with opalescents and glitter pigments in my work.

Another challenge in my work is balancing my day job with my fine art business. I started painting as a passion and hobby so I could flex my fine art muscles more. It was an outlet for my creativity and stress reducer but now I’m trying to grow it into something more. Balancing that with a full-time job and other personal obligations and passions can be hard to balance.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Amanda Mohs Fine Art – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in abstract paintings. My paintings are created using liquid acrylic paint and mixed mediums on canvas or panels. The paintings are done in a modern aesthetic and often use metallics and bright, bold colors.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m working on building my collection for the Jonquil Fall Festival (last weekend of October). I’ve been spending a lot of time creating new work for the festival. I just made my first table which uses my artwork on the table top and then is coated with a strong epoxy. I’ve also been getting some prints done using different papers and techniques. I’ve got one that has a really cool holographic flake in the print that adds a great dimension and shine to the artwork.
