Meet Shelsey Reed of Get Black and Branded in Covington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelsey Reed.

Shelsey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The start of Get Black and Branded LLC, was something so random but much needed. I visited an old coworker once and she had a local magazine that spotlighted young influentials and business owners in the community. As I looked through the magazine, which showcased 40 individuals, there were only about four minorities in total. Three African Americans and one being Hispanic. At that moment, I knew that there was a lack of representation of our Minorities within my community, hence the start of my movement.

Creating and using our own hashtag has been a success. I am encouraging all Black Owned Businesses to use the hashtag #BlackAndBranded on Social media. This creates visibility and helps find the products and services we all need.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I have encountered times in which I have wanted to give up. One of the biggest struggles would be when I couldn’t identify a clear path but I pushed through. I stayed true to what my purpose is so that others would be motivated, even when I wasn’t.

We’d love to hear more about Get Black and Branded.
Get Black and Branded LLC is here to showcase excellence. The goal is to identify locally owned Black businesses and get the word out to others. I support other business, leave reviews and share with like-minded individuals in the community. One of the most thriving services of GB&B is creating visuals such as logos, flyers, and business cards.

We have apparel, such as tees, and we’re working on hoodies for fall. They are a great addition to business owners as they showcase their excellence. Our motto being “Showcasing Excellence.” For our non-business owners, I help with resumes and cover letters, as well as job placement. For example, I’d share job postings from Black-owned businesses that I have come across. I have more services and products that I am working on and can’t wait to get the ball rolling on them.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, absolutely. Too many times do we look for products and services not knowing that they are right next door to us. Our family members, friends, and neighbors.

If someone like me is just starting off, I would tell them “Go for it, no matter if you have a clear vision. It will eventually start to come together in the end. Also, ASK FOR HELP if needed.” Something that I did not mind doing was speaking with my friends about their start-ups. As a city, we have to grow to support one another so that we can continue to thrive.
