Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Oluwafemi.
Samuel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my journey back in 2013 when I used to leave in South Africa. I lived with my uncle who managed a church TV station. After high school, I was not sure what my next plan was. However, I wasn’t much of a school person, so my uncle got me a job at their TV station, where I learned about cameras and editing. To be honest, it wasn’t that smooth. I struggled with the editing – back then we used a software called FINAL CUT 7. But after six months of learning from my trainer, I was finally given a task. I worked there for another six months before getting a job at a very popular TV show that runs in Nigeria – it’s called AGOGO AYO. Only old heads that live in Nigeria would know it.
2017 came and I moved down to the US. I came to Georgia in 2018 and met a friend whom I’m very close to now. He’s a barber and had posted a haircutting video on his page. I asked who shot the video, and he told me about Daka David, a very good and popular videographer here in Kennesaw, GA. I contacted Daka, telling him I loved his work and that I wanted to shadow him. Luckily, he accepted and he has taught me so much as we shoot together. He’s given me tips and ideas, and we’ve shot so many projects and wedding videos together. Working with Daka, and others like @calvinmauricemedia, I continue improving in videography and photography. I’ve gained so much confidence to work on independent projects, too.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. The main struggles I’ve faced is surviving in a new environment/country and having the time and money to invest in myself. I was broke, so I moved across the continent in search for something better. I worked 12-hour shifts at a warehouse job just to get by. I didn’t have enough time and money to put into videography. I was exhausted, drained from doing work I didn’t love. But this year, I’ve overcome many of these challenges.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My videography and photography business is called SABO Media. I specialize in events and creative content videos like weddings, travel cinematic videos, and studio photography. I’m best known for event videos and travel cinematic videos as I contribute to creative video challenges by popular Youtubers. For me, every day is a proud moment whenever people enjoy and give my work love.
Despite 2020 being a tough year, it marks a special milestone for me. This was my year to take risks, as I left my 12-hour shift job to launch full-time into my videography and photography business. This is my fifth month full-time, and even though I didn’t have a strong clientele in the beginning, so many people have believed in me and shown me support by booking me for shoots. I am so proud of what SABO Media has become and what it will continue to grow into. I believe my work ethic sets me apart. My passion and hunger to learn more and constantly better myself. I’m self-taught, and for me, YouTube is university. Every day, I spend 2-3 hours watching and learning different ways to shoot, how to plan, edit, etc. I always set both long and short term goals for myself, since they keep me on my toes.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood has to be growing up in a very big family. I have four siblings and I am the second to the last. Family has always been everything to me. I also grew up playing soccer – it was the only thing that kept me out of trouble. I played it all my life, with my friends, went to every soccer practice and game. I still try to play occasionally. Growing up, I loved it so much that I even wanted to play professionally.
