Meet Karimah White of Taste of Perfection in Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karimah White.

Karimah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My interest in cooking started with summers spent at my grandparents back in Missouri, my hometown, when I was a little girl. That love for cooking continued all throughout high school, where I attended many culinary competitions that eventually led me to win a scholarship for the culinary program at Tennessee State Tech. I graduated at the top of my class and quickly began my culinary career working at the Titans Stadium, Bridge stone Arena and Nashville Sounds stadium, where I was a sous chef under Chef Debbie Boecher. As my culinary career experience grew, others quickly saw potential in her skills and took me under their wing. They’ve all been great mentors and have taught me many of the skills I incorporate into my culinary style today.

Starting my own business wasn’t something I had really planned out or anything. Of course, I had people encouraging me to do it but it was something I never really put much thought into. Then I woke up one morning and had this overwhelming feeling that it was what I needed to do with my life. That was when I was 23. It definitely has not been an easy journey. I’m 37 now and just about three years ago, I had gotten to the point of being able to fully financially support myself and family off of my own business.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No! When you’re self-employed, there are always challenges. I think one of the hardest challenges I faced was when I was doing a build-out for my business. I had a horrible landlord. Contractors didn’t do what their responsibility for and I had a lawyer that dropped the ball on a commercial contract. I came very close to losing my entire business and my mind. Thankfully, I was able to make it through all of that. We got out of contract with that landlord, win some and lost some with contractors, and I’ve moved to a new location that has been so much better.

I can’t say that I would want to start it over again and do anything different. It has definitely been hard but the stress, laying on the floor and crying daily, not knowing which way to go, etc. it all came to lessons and knowing how to move forward within my business, but it also help me grow as a person.
