Meet Haseena Peera of Shadow Tribe Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haseena Peera.

Haseena, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Shadow Tribe Productions is not a commercial company, but a partnership and small network of skilled individuals. The group first came into being when I met and worked with local cinematographer Brandon Mishawn on a music video project called “Horse Eater” by Cinema Novo in 2016. At the time, I was the frontwoman for the band and Mishawn had approached me after a few shows throughout the years. He told me that our style of music inspired him visually and that he was motivated to capture us on film. Finally, when we were ready to release our studio album, I knew exactly who to call.

It was Brandon’s ideology of only filming what inspires him that became the seed for Shadow Tribe Productions. Of course, ideology was only half of it. His use of the camera was ingenious and unmatched. I quickly realized I only wanted to work with him from then on. Together we make a great pair. I’d work with the talent on and off-set, assisting in organization and planning while he’d work his magic with the lens. Although we were a solid pair, we hardly ever work completely alone.

Christoper Richardson, Justin Miller, Jeff Thomas, Greg Golter, Evan Fowler, Chloe Chon just to name a few, all helped us in creating our visions behind the scenes. Our films are not for everyone; they usually have a lot of emotional weight, so it was important to us that anyone involved could handle the content. After the third or fourth project, we worked on together – Brandon proposed that we make a name for ourselves as a small partnership. He actually came up with the name “Tribe of Shadows.” Signifying that although our unit was flexible, we all shared the same ideology of capturing on film what others may find dark, sinister, or too heavy. We eventually came to the name Shadow Tribe, and well, here we are today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Before COVID-19, our biggest obstacles were working with small budgets, creating new legal contracts, and keeping a steady stream of new clientele. Now we have clientele approaching us left and right but COVID has affected our resources. Locations are not readily available, extra-hands on set are limited, and even our extra editors and post-production crew are working other jobs to make up for the projects that have been on pause since the start of the pandemic. Everything in 2020 is a little wonky, but we are getting more creative by the day and we are up for the challenge.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Shadow Tribe Productions is different because we have a unique vision and we choose our projects based on pure passion for the content – not the highest bidder. We are not afraid to get political, we are not afraid to get controversial, and we value an ethical environment on set. These three values set us apart from all commercial companies. This is what I’m most proud of. I have played many roles during our various projects. I’m most known for my lead-role in “Isonade” by Cinema Novo on camera, but off-camera, my Directing and Editing are where my passions lie.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me, is making a living out of what your passion is. There’s not a set monetary value for me but I’d like to enjoy my work to the fullest and look forward to it when I wake up in the morning.
