Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Tootz.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Born and raised in Memphis, TN dj’in has always been in us. It actually started with our dad. He started djing in his twenties. He passed away from cancer when we were 13. Years later, our older brother Nick DJed our sweet sixteen and tried to convince us then that we should start DJing. At that time, we said no because we only wanted to host parties and play tennis.
Around 2013 in college, we heard Big Sue on k97. Big Toot said, “What if we started djing, we would be so live!” Lil Toot thought it was a crazy idea and was not convinced at all. We emailed Big Sue and she gave us a guide as to what we will need to buy to start djing. It took us an entire year to get equipment but we worked hard, saved our money and bought the equipment. We then asked Big Sue to teach us how to dj. To our surprise, she basically told us we had to teach ourselves. Which was the bets thing she could have done. We watched videos, read books, went out and watched other djs, and the rest is history!
Now as simple as that sounds, it was definitely not easy. We are females in a male-dominated industry. We have to not looked at as only eye candy to the masses. We grinded and got it out the mud in Memphis. We networked and made a name for ourselves. Then we decided to take Dj Tootz to new heights and move to Atlanta, GA.
We have been in Atlanta for about a year and a couple months and it has been amazing so far. We have met so many new people and taking the Dj Tootz brand to new levels. We are now official Djs for Recording Artist Duke Deuce (signed to Q.C.) He is from Memphis as well. We are House djs at the famous Cascade Skating Rink and we will be on a reality show called “Djs of Atlanta.” Covid-19 slowed down the tours that were planned but that did not stop our show. We continued to build and network. Our gigs and tour dates with Duke Duece are picking back up and the only way is up. We are team members of the dj company Just In Time Dj and also numerous other events, weddings, and parties. Atlanta has been good to us so far and we can’t wait to see what else is in store.
Has it been a smooth road?
It most certainly has not been a smooth road. We are females in a male-dominated industry. There are and have been so many times where we were simply just overlooked because we were females. We have been the underdogs on numerous occasions, all while djing in Memphis. Memphis is a hard city to come up in. The people are hard to win over, but once you do, they rock with you forever. We love our city.
Moving to Atlanta was one of the hardest things we ever did in our life. Not really having a foundation in the A was difficult at first. It was kinda like we had to almost start over. We had to network all over again and get people to support us. Atlanta has so many talented people. So we fit right in but we had to make ourselves stand out from the masses. Right as we ere starting to break ground in the A. Covid-19 struck and put a hault on everything in entertainment. It’s been a long seven months but we kept networking and finding ways to do gigs. Venues are opening back up slowly so Atlanta nightlife, club and concert scene will be back to normal soon.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
We are known for being two Twin Female djs who will turn you up.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love the way Atlanta hustles. Everybody here has a hustle and it just motivate you to do better at whatever it is you are trying to accomplish.
