Today we’d like to introduce you to Latonya Patterson.
Latonya, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Founder of Ambitiously Him Her King Foundation was found in 2018 when my son became a teen father at 17. My son teen parenting situation was the true inspiration behind the organization. I started providing items and resources for local Young Parents, ages 13-23 out of our small townhome. Being a part of a Generation of Young Parents; (My Grand Mother, My Mother, Myself and now my son). I knew more awareness needed to be spread for Young Parents. Once donations from the Community became overwhelming, I had to get an office space to start providing services.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To be honest, it hasn’t been a smooth road. My main struggle was getting a Charitable Organization up and running. I knew nothing about running a Nonprofit but I knew everything about wanting to stop Generational Curses and vowing to be The Change You are Looking For. I was devoted to making a difference but not knowing the legal way to do it. It took me a while to get the paperwork done and a legal business up and running to Service Young Parents for FREE. I’m still not where I think we should be and that’s a struggle for me.
Please tell us about Ambitiously Him Her King Foundation.
We service young parents ages 13-23 years of age. We help with Baby Essentials, Essentials for the parents and Everyday Resources that are needed to be a Positive, Productive Parent. I’m most proud of helping over 100 local Parents and over 20 in other states. What set our organization apart from others. Most organizations only Service Mothers or Teen Mothers. We service all Parents (Mother and Father). We have also help grandmothers that had custody of their grandchildren and a Foster Care Parent in the past.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My son Jabriel “Quese” Calhoun & Shameria McCord deserves credit because, without their Testimony of having my grandson King, I wouldn’t be inspired to start this organization.
My Board: Shundretta Patterson, Janiyah Calhoun, Marsha Sewell, Maria Howell, Trinitius Smith, Lakeisha Calhoun. Who help me run this organization smoothly, rather its pick up Donations from the Community, Deliver care packages, conduct workshops and community events… they are there like my Shadow lol.
The Community of Mobile, Alabama, has truly been a Blessing to our Organization with donating gently used, new and monetary Donations. Without them, these Young Parents wouldn’t have the amazing things they have.
