Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Joi McCombs.
Angel Joi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It started long before I could talk, walk, read, or write. When I was a baby, my parents read a new book to me every night. It was one of my favorite things. I didn’t realize this was going to be instrumental in my life. I’ve always had an outgoing personality, I thrived as a baby commercial model. Later, I participated in countless fashion shows and loved the stage. Eventually, my model agent suggested acting due to the talent she saw I possessed. I welcomed the challenge of expanding my entertainment portfolio into the world of film. The film industry is completely different from commercial or print modeling. I worked really hard in and out of acting classes over the last two years developing lifelong skills! I was praised by a top Los Angeles agent due to my memorization skills and clarity when reading scripts.
At the age of five, my vocabulary was beyond what one would expect due to my love of reading. This gave me an extra advantage over the other 4 and 5-year-olds who were not at my reading level. I skipped one grade level in school, and maintained straight-A grades. My mom suggested we write our own book because she could not find a book on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). She wanted to teach me all about the HBCU experience. I started going to children’s events, and speaking engagements that my mom was involved in when I was 4 years old. I was always the youngest child at these events. I met a lot of older role models, and I wanted to be a leader too. One day, a host handed me the microphone, and I talked about everything I had learned. I talked about the importance of believing in yourself, confidence, doing good in school, reading, and my journey of becoming the star in my own children’s book “My HBCU Life” and having a book series called Angel’s Adventures.
People were so impressed with me and, I was proud of myself. My mom started taking me to more events at elementary schools, and HBCUs across the country. I created my own company, iMatter Creations, LLC, with a focus on educating children and encouraging literature. I entered a pageant and decided to wow the crowd with an original HBCU rap because I would always sing and rap when I went to schools to talk about my book. Everywhere I went, people were shocked and loved my original rap performance. I knew I would officially record my own record and this year, at the age of five years old, I recorded my first hit single, “Glowing Up.” It is out on all music platforms and you can search “Glowing Up” by Angel Joi.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, but I believe challenges help to shape one’s character. I learn from every failure and every successful situation. I’ve accomplished more in my life so far (I just turned six) than most adults. I consider myself blessed. Covid-19 has lead to the cancelation of my second annual book tour and I was very sad about this. I also had to cancel all in-person vending events that were scheduled for several months. I still perform occasionally, but I have to be very selective on the number of shows I attend for safety reasons. I’m moving forward and getting ready to release my next hit single. You can find me on all music platforms and my next book is coming out soon. I remain confident, fearless, and determined to enjoy my life while making it as meaningful as possible. I’m creating my own brand and inspiring other children. I love what I do. I tell everyone to remember my name, Angel Joi!

I am very proud because to date, iMatter Creations, has donated a total of 500 books within inner-city schools. My business has grown over the last year and with mommy’s help, I am helping other children become authors too! Services include editing, ghostwriting, publishing, and more.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have the support of both my parents, my extended family, and many supporters I have met along the way. My mother specifically has played and continues to play a big role in my success and the success of my business. She is the one who spends her days or nights helping me to prep for acting auditions and driving me to every event.
