Meet Selvina Cottman of The Beauty Cabana in East Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Selvina Cottman.

Selvina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
On June 10, 2018, Selvina Cottman Founded The Beauty Cabana in Dekalb county Georgia at 18 years young. She has always had a passion for serving others because she loved how amazing she could make people feel in the end. She has never been the type of Cosmetologist to specialize in one thing as she loves to do many things and hates the idea of being boxed in. That means that she had to spend a lot of time studying each subject that she wished to pursue. She graduated from Paul Mitchell The School Atlanta in September 2019 as a Master Cosmetologist, where she then used the money she received while working at her part-time job at a restaurant to invest in her own home studio, where she could begin her solo practices and building her clientele. She loved the beach and the feeling that she receives when she is on vacation, so she thought. Why not incorporate the beach theme into the beauty spa? She rarely ever sees anyone who is not wowed when they go to the beach, so she wanted to bring that same feeling to the spa. She wants when people enter her spa, they automatically feel wowed, at peace and comfortable. The name The Beauty Cabana was then formed when she noticed how much she loved beach cabanas and just lying out on the cabana at the beach. When she then thought, “Beauty Cabana,” meaning being able to get also beautified while being in an extremely relaxing atmosphere.

Has it been a smooth road?
Opening any business will bring challenges. I’m very grateful that every challenge and obstacle brought to me has given me an opportunity to grow and learn. One of the most challenging things about having an at-home salon is marketing. I had to learn how to grow my clientele through social media Ads and mutual friends. A lot of the time, we all have this amazing business, but we lack the clientele to keep our business afloat. So my main challenge was bringing new people into my chair, but as soon as I started to put more effort Into my Instagram appearance and ensure that all of my clients are getting the service they deserve. The clients just come now. That’s why I’m thankful I was able to learn how to market. I feel like if I can get people I never met to come to my home for a hair service, I can absolutely one day get them to come into my luxury beauty spa.

The Beauty Cabana is a Luxury Full-Service Spa while right now, we only offer Hair services, like Sew-ins, Custom Lace Wigs, Silk Presses and more. We will later offer more spa related services like Facials, Massages, Makeup, Waxing, Nails and a lot more. As a company, I’m so proud of the atmosphere and vibe we bring to our clients. We often hear, “It’s so relaxing in here” or “I feel like I’m on the beach.” That makes me happy every time because all I ever wanted was to create a space where you could relax while getting pampered. Most of us love going to the beach. We associate that with relaxing, so we wanted to bring the same vibe to the salon! I think what sets The Beauty Cabana apart from others is the overall vibe of the salon, the amazing customer service, and also the diversity.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career has been honestly getting a consistent clientele. My worst fear has always been not having enough clients to keep my business afloat, but by the grace of God, I never had to worry. Clients just come. I was always told don’t stress about clients. You have an amazing aura, your work is amazing, and you have and amazing salon. Clients will find you. Clients want to find you. Clients are happy to find you—there enough clients in the world for everyone. When I shifted my thinking to a more positive outcome, I started to manifest more clients. That has been my proudest moment of this whole journey. Looking at my booking app and seeing a full booking, nothing can compare to the feeling.
