Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaheen Solomon.
Hi Shaheen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was raised in a foster home from the age of eight until I graduated from college, ward of the state. My story isn’t unique, but it is a journey all my own. While in foster care, I gravitated towards sports that would allow me to release the anger that I’d felt from being abandoned by my mother who was addicted to substances. Football became my outlet. In high school, I received countless awards and statewide recognition for my talent. Ultimately leading to a football scholarship at Georgia Southern University, where I earned two conference championship rings for the six-time national championship team as a starting defensive end and a degree in Public Relations.
Upon graduating, I started over, back to living with my foster parents. I knew I wanted more. Within three months of graduating and living with them, I moved to Atlanta – no money, no job, only my girlfriend, at that time, that had a job. From that time, I jumped from job to job in my field of public relations, which for many in Atlanta seemed to be marketing and sales. Soon after, I found my niche with a PR firm which led me to continue to cultivate my skills as a professional. Over the years, I’ve worked with many organizations, highlighting their services – but I was missing that creative outlet. I started SOLOmedia with the assistance of my wife, who was my girlfriend upon moving here, focusing in on aspiring politicians and small businesses. Since its creation, SOLOmedia has worked with state and local politicians and has grown to be a sought after communications firm within that field.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t been easy. As an African American male within the PR field, I’ve faced many challenges while working with my counterparts – seeking to change the narrative and the perception one might have for someone that looks like me. SOLOmedia began as a place to prove that we have the creativity, the passion and the vision to bring your thoughts into reality. Having been a Ward of the State, I faced many challenges that one with family support and or financial support wouldn’t have. However, I saw a vision and wanted to make it plain – there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As the founder of SOLOmedia, I’ve worked with many citizens seeking to make a change within their communities. I’m most proud of being able to bring them into the forefront with simple creativity that highlights who they are, their concerns, their want for change, and what drove them to move forward in a public light. I’ve created commercials, advertisements, mailers, websites, speech writing, communications materials, direct mailers, etc. I’ve set us apart from the competitors because I highlight what makes the candidate special. What they plan to do for the community and how they plan to accomplish it.
What does success mean to you?
Success for me is ensuring that the clients or businesses that I partner with are completely happy with their services, no matter the outcome of win or lose. Word of mouth goes a long way. If someone is happy with your services, they’ll spread positivity about their experiences with you – that’s success to me.
