Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamiah Hudson.
Hi Jamiah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Jamiah!!! A Singer/Songwriter born and raised in Augusta, GA! Super country gal lol. I started singing in church at the age of five, where I lead my first solo. After that moment, I knew my family knew and everyone around me knew that I was born to sing. From there, my mom and grandparents who raised me really poured into me and help me cultivate my gifts by putting me in voice lessons, acting classes, guitar and piano lessons. ALL THINGS ENTERTAINMENT. I did talent shows and competitions, which allowed me to be put in front of important people at a very young age. By the age of nine, I booked my first official and paid show! It was “The Wiz” directed by Tony Award-winning director Kenny Leon which showed at the Rialto right in Atlanta.
At age 11, I booked my first big leading role starring as JOJO in the “Suessical The Musical” shown at the Tony Award-winning Alliance Theatre also in Atlanta and we even went on to tour. (Now, I was living in Augusta still at the time, which is 2 hours away from Atlanta, so me my mom and nana would drive everyday to and from Atlanta for rehearsals and shows! But because the role was so demanding, I was pulled out of school and began homeschooling. My mom even quit her job to be able to be on the road with me!!!! My family is SOOOO supportive.)
Fast Forward as I got older, I begin to tap more into my songwriting and artistry side. I always knew I wanted to sing and perform and do more than musical theatre but I didn’t really know how, so I applied to go to college at Belmont University in Nashville. Nashville has kidnapped me because I’ve been here for six years but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Though I only went to Belmont for two years, the connections I made were life-changing and those connections led me to meet people like rapper Tim Gent, Singers Bryant Taylorr and Lauren McClinton and Producer AB Eastwood. We all really just CLICKED since day one and built a solid community of not just musicians but FAMILY and we’ve been able to accomplish some really amazing things together. Since living here, I’ve been able to sing alongside Chris Stapleton, Tori Kelly, Kirk Franklin and so many more. I’ve gotten a few writing and movie placements and I’ve been in rooms I would have never imagined!!! In 2019, I released my debut EP titled “22”. Currently, I am gearing up to drop a handful of singles for the year 2021. I’m just so thankful and blessed to be doing what God has called me to do!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
NOT A SMOOTH ROAD lol. I mean you deal with getting told NO, comparison, no guidance AKA not knowing what the heck you’re doing!!! lol. I mean it can get overwhelming, especially when you’re doing it all on your own! It forces you to just jump out there and figure it out! but the hardest struggle has been having PATIENCE. We want things RIGHT NOW and in this industry/world it just doesn’t work like that. Timing is EVERYTHING. Sometimes it’s hard to trust God’s timing but His is ALWAYS better than ours. You just have to learn to love and ENJOY the journey. Don’t discard the place you’re in because everything is preparation for your destiny.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I mainly write and record music for myself. If I’m not singing for myself, I’m singing BGV for a lot of country and christian artist’s in Nashville whether that’s for their album or for award shows and live performances like the CMA’S and the Dove Awards. and sometimes even for movies!!! If I’m not writing for myself, I’m co-writing with so many other amazing writers in Nash to pitch for films, tv shows and other artists! My first major writing placement was with the international pop group Now United. I have a few more cool things in the works that I’m soooo excited about but I just cant say yet !!! What sets me apart from others is that I’ve been in every part of this industry since a very young age, from dance to acting to modeling I mean you name it. I’m also a classically trained singer which is something I definitely take pride in because it’s just so foundational as a singer.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Most important lesson along the journey is to ENJOY THE JOURNEY. Live in the moment, LEARN from everyone and everything. Don’t get so caught up in where you are or where you aren’t. Don’t compare yourself to others but just truly BE in the moment. I said this earlier and I really stand by it, don’t discard the place you’re in!!! Everything is preparation for your destiny. oh and NEVER GIVE UP. and don’t hold back!!! (I have that tatted on me lol)
