Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Danielle Granville.
Hi Alexis, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started when I was three years old in my grandparents’ living room, running around in an oversized t-shirt that belonged to my grandfather, asking, “mama can I preach?” Now please note, I am no preacher, but even at the tender age of three, I knew that I had something to say. I then went on to attend a performing arts high school in New Orleans, Louisiana called NOCCA, where I focused on musical theatre and refined my skills as a performer. That same year I auditioned for American Idol for the second time and became a top 80 finalist on season 14 of American Idol. The following year, I was a contestant on BET’s Chasing Destiny, all while being a student at Dillard University. The show was filming in Atlanta at the time, and that’s when I realized that Atlanta was a place that I would thrive.
After filming for the show, I headed back to New Orleans to finish school. Unknown to me, the next three years would be the most pivotal years of my life at the time. That’s when I spread my wings to begin working behind the scenes as well as on stage. I began producing and hosting concerts and events on campus and around the city of New Orleans while still releasing music and performing shows. At times I would even produce a concert and open for the headliner all in the same night. At the end of my junior year at Dillard, I landed an internship at Showtime Networks with the Smithsonian Channel, apart of the digital media department. This was the most challenging yet invigorating summer I’ve ever experienced. I hopped on a bus headed to New York City with nowhere to stay, but I knew that all things would work out for my good, and they did. Spending the summer of 2018 in NYC taught me how to hustle and make visions come to life.
In May of 2019, I graduated from Dillard University with my degree in Mass Communication with a dual concentration in Journalism and Public Relations. Not even a month after graduating, I kissed my loved ones goodbye and headed to Atlanta, Georgia, where I would begin another internship at Warner Media with Turner Content Distribution, where I was with the marketing team. I made Atlanta my new home. I soaked up every little piece of knowledge that presented itself. I was eager to become. Shortly after my internship ended, I started a company that I had been planning and strategizing for two years, V5ctory. V5ctory is a Public Relations, Marketing & Project Management firm exclusively for artists and entertainers, which lands me here today. I’m a mogul in the making.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has been far from smooth. Despite being a naturally confident person, I doubted myself often because I knew I had so many talents and abilities, but I wasn’t sure how they would all work together. I’ve learned to trust God and the path before me. There were also some physical challenges. While living and working in New York City, I was without stable living conditions. I moved ten times in a matter of two months. There were days when I would leave for work and not know where I was going to lay my head at night. When it came to pursuing music, I audition for about five different television talent shows before I got the yes on American Idol. I never wanted to quit, but there were many times when I became discouraged and felt invisible because I knew that what I had could change lives.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a singer/songwriter and entrepreneur. I own a public relations, marketing, and project management firm exclusively for artists and entertainers. As an artist, I specialize in sonically telling stories that touch the soul of listeners. As an industry professional, I specialize in helping artists and entertainers tell their stories through their music and helping them strategically communicate and reach their audiences beyond their music. Helping people is my greatest passion; my name literally means to help. My life’s experiences have molded me to be able to help artists in entertainment and creatives tell their stories with their music and beyond. I’ve been able to merge my understanding and experience as an artist with my knowledge and experience as a marketing and communication strategist to effectively help artists. There’s a phrase that says, “Takes one to know one.”
In the case of what I do with my work at V5ctory, as an artist, I intimately know the needs and desires that artists require from their team, and as an industry professional, I know how to provide those needs and desires in a way that makes sense to the artist. I have a heart for the misunderstood and oftentimes, artists and those in the creative community are the misunderstood. I’m most proud of my ability to meet people where they are and help them amplify their voices. v5ctory is a firm for artists by artists. Our services include public relations, playlisting and placements, campaign and rollout development, social media management, event production, and project management.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Shout out to God for creating me how he did. God is my ultimate source of all creativity and being. So many people have helped me along my journey and cultivated the purpose within me. My mom, who started her college career in journalism, planted the seed within me to be the best that I can be. She drove me around the country tirelessly to make sure that I was able to audition and perform. My family plays a HUGE part in my career. From my grandparents to my brother and all of my extended family, I know that if no one else supports me, they always will and always have. Kristie King is one of my biggest cheerleaders. We as volunteers for the Revolt Summit in 2019 in Atlanta. The first words she ever spoke to me, without even knowing me, were, “You are a star.” From that moment, I’ve been able to lean on her as a source of strength as I journey to become that star. Dr. Courtney Williams started as by advisor for an organization that I was president of called DAB (Dillard Activities Board).
When we met, I was only singing and thought that was all I could do. He was an integral part of my development as a strategist and event producer. Christine Thomas was my first mentor in NYC. She’s now like family and flies across the country to support me at events and concerts. Reginald Nicholas is the person that I say found me. When I was 15 singing at a church conference, he spotted me and the rest is history. He’s now gone on to be a Grammy Award-winning engineer, but despite his accolades and awards, he always is willing to help me however I may need it. Those who listen to my music truly make it easy for me to continue to make music. My audience is a reflection of who I am. Their stories are my stories. Those who trust me to help them tell their stories and advance their careers and artistry continue to open my eyes to the limitless possibilities that life constantly presents.
