Meet Photographer: Matthew Gillette

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Gillette.

Matthew, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my photography journey early 2015. After picking up my first DSLR, I was inspired by the city of Atlanta and the people that inhabit it. Through photoshoots such as portraits and events, I was able to meet other creative artists and it was then that I truly fell in love with the city I grew up in.

Has it been a smooth road?
Some of the struggles I came across during my photography journey was definitely finding my style in terms of what I wanted to shoot and what I wanted my viewers to feel when they saw each of my photos. Through experience and time, I was able to find out what I liked and didn’t like with my work. The art of photography also pushed my creative mind to the limit. Each person I photographed was different, and so no photoshoot is ever the same.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
I have been very lucky in regards to having such a big support system for me and my photography. My parents, friends, and fellow photographers have been a huge help in my journey and I truly see that as a blessing.

Is there a quality or characteristic that has played an outsized role in your success?
Creativity is a key component of a photographer’s success. Being able to look past the normal perspective of what a picture is “supposed” to look like is essential.

What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
I love the people in our city. I love the variety of personalities and the different creatives that make up Atlanta. I don’t like the traffic here.
