Today we’d like to introduce you to Juanita Walker.
Hi Juanita, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a native of New Jersey, born and raised in South Jersey. I learned valuable lessons from my Mother— who made tough decisions as the leader of our family and single mother of five children— to give us a better life. She taught me how to chase my dreams and make them a reality through her own personal experiences as an entrepreneur.
From an early age, I knew like her, I too, wanted to be an entrepreneur. Watching my Mother juggle multiple successful businesses helped me develop a “figure it out and make it happen” attitude that I incorporate into my daily life today. I can still remember the first product I sold on my own, which was M&M’s candies that I obtained through a school fundraiser. Now that I think about it, that was the best MLM company for kids. I had my eyes on the prize and I knew exactly how much candy I had to sell to win the RCA cassette tape I so desperately wanted. I exceeded my goal to sell the most boxes of M&M’s, won the cassette tape, and it was the most rewarding feeling that I ever experienced! My Mother gave me a shot at entrepreneurship when I was young and inexperienced; she believed in me and entrusted me to work at her boutique and real estate companies— opening and closing her brick and mortar storefronts on weekends. I gave my all to those jobs because I never wanted to let her down. But while I discovered how to be a business owner from my Mother, it wasn’t until I was in college when I started my own online business, Simply Sassy, that I realized the importance of credit, budgeting and saving.
Fast forward to today, I am a realtor and owner of a Financial Literacy company called 7thAvenew. 7thavenew came to fruition after I was denied for both an apartment and a job because of my poor credit history. Feelings of hopelessness and embarrassment inspired me to work on repairing my own credit and budgeting my finances. Shortly after, I was able to purchase my first home without any down payment assistance. I began educating friends and family about the importance of sustaining and maintaining healthy credit. And since 7thavenew opened for business, we have helped hundreds of families with credit restoration, buying or selling their homes, and financial wellness training.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would be lying if I said this has been an easy journey. The truth is, it has been bitter-sweet. But, being able to witness successful outcomes for both me and my consumers after working so hard to obtain a win and gain makes it all worth it. The moment I informed my friends and family about how I overcame credit obstacles and decided to start a business assisting others with similar issues, my inbox was overflowing with requests for assistance. The biggest challenge I faced was targeting the right people to help because while many people requested my assistance, not all of them were serious about making the necessary changes which resulted in prospective clients letting me down. There’s so much pressure on business owners to keep going through high-yielding months to the lowest, so remaining positive is a constant challenge.
As a proud business owner, I understand that challenges are part of the process. However, to build a successful business, one must be determined, consistent, persistent, willing to learn from both successes and failures, and have an open mind. For me, support networks are everything! Just having someone to call anytime when I’m feeling overwhelmed and disappointed helps me tremendously. I find comfort in other business owners who understood what I’m going through and are willing to share advice from their own personal experiences.
We’ve been impressed with 7thAvenew, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
7thAvenew is a one-stop-shop for everything Real Estate, Credit Restoration and Financial Literacy. We stand out from the typical credit repair and financial companies because we make every client feel like family, we invite new conversations, inspire individuals to be financially healthy, and equip them with the tools to repairing their credit, building generational wealth, and investing in oneself. We have developed online courses for members to benefit from my expertise about real estate, credit repair, and the importance of being financially healthy in personal and business ventures. We are affordable and family-oriented and believe in putting our clients first. There are a lot of companies that offer the same type of services as 7thavenew, but we stand firmly on our commitment to provide unwavering assistance, as well as the appropriate tools to our clients to ensure their personal/professional goals are successfully reached.
What does success mean to you?
I believe success is defined by who you are and the person you aspire to be. The definition may be different based on the person. I define success by the amount of people I help achieve their goals and the continued ability to be my own boss. For me, in order to truly succeed, I need to accomplish the goals I set with integrity. Never let anyone else define success for you! You are the best advocate for yourself. If you failed the first time, get back up and try again. If you are serious about success, keep pushing forward and don’t forget to have fun.
