Daily Inspiration: Meet Janelle Martinez-Cruz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Martinez-Cruz.

Hi Janelle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been an artist ever since I could remember. My parents were always supportive in growing my love for art as well. However, when I was 14, my family went through major changes and difficulties. My mom gifted me a beautiful set of acrylics to “paint my feelings.” The following year, I had my first gallery show. I knew that I wanted to become a professional artist. Now, almost six years later, FroggieFlor has bloomed. The reason behind the name FroggieFlor is because as a young kid, my mom called me “Froggie”. I would not sit still. Spanish is my first language. That’s where “Flor” comes from. It means Flower in Spanish. As a painter of flowers and nature, my mom and I thought it would be perfect!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been struggles. Any artist can relate to not being motivated once in a while. In my case, I had certain people tell me it wasn’t possible to live off my art but, here we are.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Claude Monet once said, “Perhaps I owe being a painter to flowers.” For me, it’s the same. I am heavily inspired by Flowers and water. Growing up as a Cuban girl, you learn to appreciate the ocean and the culture. I can say I’m inspired by that as well. I work with oils, acrylics, and watercolor. I love fluidity and the bright colors these mediums allow me. I am currently working on a new collection called “Orilla Del Mar Vive.” Can’t wait to share it!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Definitely! Firstly, the Bible helps me move forward as a happy and bright person. I also love reading books about the ocean and flowers. I am currently also loving Emily Jeffords podcast. It’s so helpful and relatable!
