Life & Work with Kamora Platt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamora Platt.

Hi Kamora, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I recently moved to Georgia after feeling homeless for a little over a year and having to stay with family and friends. I was invited to Atlanta by a family member and because I felt that I needed some space where I was previously living with a friend, I took the opportunity and came to Atlanta, but it was supposed to be for a few weeks in January of this year. A situation came up and I needed a place to move to again, so I asked my cousin if I could stay with her and she told me no but recommended me to apartments in Atlanta where I could move without having to pay a deposit and that’s how I ended up in my apartment where I live, located in Fairburn, Georgia. So my story comes with many details that I don’t mind sharing. I currently work a full-time job from home and a part-time job that I just started a few days ago.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road. December 2018, I was separated from my husband and that was court-ordered. January 2019, I lost a child that I raised from birth to 12 years old to DSS because of a petty decision made by a person that made a decision based on personal reasons and in that same year, I was being evicted from my apartment because I started a new job and because the apartments I had lived in from 2006 through July 2019, were income-based, I had no choice but to move. Didn’t give me much time to search for other places because it was only a 30-day notice and I was just starting my new job, so I wasn’t able to take off to search for new places. Divorced July 2021. So no, it has not been an easy road BUT I trust through the process.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently work from home for Assurant, which is a call center and have been working from home since the outbreak of the pandemic. I started this job in November of 2018 and it has been an overwhelming task, but easy to do job. I’m a customer service specialist, so I assist homeowners that have a mortgage who has received an insurance claim check due to some type of property damage. My goal is to provide proactive customer service and always provide empathy to the customer.

I feel the thing that sets me apart is that I don’t mind going out of my way to help others, even if I suffer some type of risk. I do it from my heart and with love. Most people I feel would only do what is required of them but I will always do what it takes to meet the need of someone else. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, where I attended Coker College and my Master’s degree in Public Administration. I would like to receive my Doctorate degree in Education with a minor in Bible college just for growth and improvement on my understanding of the Bible. I desire to someday be a teacher and own a few of my own schools where I know children will be safe, loved and get what they need on a daily basis.

I do not wish to continue working with Assurant. So I have been searching for other jobs, had a few interviews but recently started working a part-time job at Tropical smoothie where I was offered a possible management position, but I am starting off part-time to learn the functions of the business. So far, it’s going great! I have to be strong, set weekly goals because I have to be able to provide for myself and not live with anyone else unless it’s an emergency and I need to.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’m easy to work with and I can be reached via cell phone or email.
