Today we’d like to introduce you to Rae Broyles.
Rae studied at American Institute of Art in Chicago and Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. This was followed by a vibrant career as an art director and creative director for a number of consumer product companies and agencies. Although painting all through those years in addition to her career, in 2001 Rae became a full time fine artist. Continuing studies included classes at Moulin de Perot in Southern France, Red Deer College in Alberta, Canada and Fine Arts Workshop in Atlanta. Rae began teaching encaustic painting at Fine Arts Workshop in 2010. Rae has also been invited to teach at Red Deer College.
Her work is primarily mixed media abstract but at times incorporates other media including, photography, video, poetry and choreography. Her work has been shown in prestigious galleries and notably, she was accepted as one of 20 National Artists in the highly respected A.I.R. Gallery in New York.
Rae’s recognitions include 2016 Platform Artist of the Year Finalist with RMG, which hosts Spectrum Miami and Art Expo New York, 2016, Mixed Media Artist of the Year at the ADC Awards in Cincinnati, OH, The Bronze Award for Painting Forward, Best in Show at JF Gallery, West Palm Beach, FL, and multiple merit awards in National Shows including the Valdosta National, Grosse Pointe Art Center, MI and the APS National Show at Chastain in Atlanta with print work.
She lives in Roswell, GA and owns Fountainhead Art Space, a community based art program to mentor emerging artists and further the growth of mod career artists by bringing exceptional talent to workshops at her studio.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Opening Fountainhead Art Space was very smooth. It had been a dream of mine to establish a place in North Atlanta where painters could come together and dig deeper into their work through shared knowledge and workshops. It all fell into place like it was in the stars and meant to be. After just one year however, the beautiful historic building we had set up our sunlit studio in was sold. This forced me to redefine the vision of the studio and also quickly find a new location to rent! I had so much support from the Roswell community that it worked out just in time that we moved to Oak Street. The latest neighborhood in Roswell that is being developed as a creative collective.
Fountainhead Art Space – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Fountainhead Art Space is a working painter’s studio as well as a gathering place and a place to learn. We offer classes in a wide range of mediums and for a wide variety of students. The instructors are well known artists in both the community and also brought in from around the US. We offer classes that are not readily available in other locations. We will also be hosting a tremendous workshop with Lisa Pressman, well known abstract and encaustic artist. In addition, we offer classes like Fearless Abstract Painting which engage ALL levels form the first time beginner to advanced levels. We have also just installed an etching press and are very excited to bring teachers like Jeffrey Hirst, Steve Dinnino and Elise Wagner to teach printmaking processes.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is being able to do what you love and not feel like you are working. Managing time between family and my passion for art has been a challenge but I feel most successful when those are in balance. As an artist, I continually strive to learn and grow.
