Today we’d like to introduce you to Ty Hawthorne.
Hi Ty, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story starts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where I came up studying the trumpet and saxophone at Germantown Settlement Music School. I’ve been playing instruments since 1998. During my teenage years, I switched gears and started to take the visual arts more seriously. In 2006 I started Imperial Grafiks. By the end of 2008, I would be creating flyers for a popular nightclub in North Philly, “923”. By February of the next year, I would be learning how to properly do a tattoo. By 2010, I would be enrolled at Art Institute of Philly majoring Culinary Arts. After Ai Philly I moved here to Atlanta to further pursue my culinary education while simultaneously writing and recording songs. Things always go as poorly planned so I moved back to Philadelphia to establish myself. By 2014 I would be back at The Art Institute in Philly for Audio Engineering. It was here that I started the brand Sine of Times. Fast forward to today and I’m tattooing, customizing apparel, writing music, painting, baking, and selling pickles. There will be even more to come!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d be fronting if I said entrepreneurship was a smooth ride. My father told me life was like a rollercoaster (I hate those, lol) and boy he was telling the truth! As a young person, I was so concentrated on my craft that I hadn’t figured out how to market myself with everything that I do. I used to struggle with consistently using social media to reach my target audience. It seemed so tedious at the time (bc it was new and annoying). Today I’m aware it’s all about your perspective but honestly, I still struggle sometimes with “showing up” on social media. This year that all changes.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
These days I’m mostly known for my visual art. I specialize in canvas and digital art. I’m still playing the sax and trumpet, writing songs. I also have a pickle business “Gourmet Pickled”. I sell a variety of pickled vegetables including cucumbers and carrots. I’m most proud of my resilience. I’m far from a superhero. I have days where I’m not necessarily feeling my best but I’ll put my foot forward anyway. I refuse to fold!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
There are different types of success in my eyes. But it is never defined by wealth. Instead, it is defined by physical, spiritual, and mental health. There are plenty of wealthy, miserable people and I don’t care to be one. I also define success through the standing of my relationships with people on an everyday basis. As well as being able to do what I love. My “work” never feels like work.
