Today we’d like to introduce you to Selah Johnson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am 21 years old and I’m originally from Long Island, New York. I am of Jamaican descent from both parent’s sides. My mother relocated me and my older brother to Georgia to live a more productive and financially stable life. I always thought of myself to be a jack of all trades due to my curious and ambitious nature.
Along the way in my life, I was a majorette dancer all four years of high school, I am currently a full-time psychology major student at Georgia Gwinnett College and will graduate next year, and I currently have an up and running hair extension business as well.
While in high school around age 16-18; I used to watch my older sister experiment with hair and do client’s hair and I always found it really interesting. Also throughout high school; I always wore wigs and sew ins and even started to learn the different qualities and grades of hair but never thought I would take such a big interest in it but when I thought of my business Syx Collection, I finally realized that I was really fascinated with hair. Everything didn’t click until summer 2021 and I decided to take a risk of having my own hair business and I officially branded my business in August of 2021 and officially launched on November 8th, 2021!
When I first started, I didn’t know what I was quite getting myself into but I knew exactly what I wanted for my business and that was to offer luxury hair extensions without breaking customer’s pockets. Finding good quality hair is kind of tricky now and I wanted to be one of the best that customers can rely on.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not! But the journey is worth it, there is no such thing as a dream absent of obstacles. Becoming an entrepreneur is not as easy as people my make it seem.
Some of the struggles I encountered were due to personal obstacles such as learning how to have patience and waiting for things to come to you when the time is right. Rushing a process will only make it harder for yourself. Another obstacle was finding that right vendor that won’t put you through a bunch of loopholes as most of them do. “RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH”! Please do your research when it comes to anything revolving your business, you have to know what your talking about and what is going on at all times when it comes to your brand to prevent from anyone taking advantage of you. That’s where me having to learn patience came into play because it takes time to find that “right one”. The last obstacle that I will mention even though I have a bunch is learning how to bet on yourself because people are not always reliable and nobody will treat your dreams/business with the same amount of care as you will. YOU ARE YOUR BRAND!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
