Meet Nabil Khan of MNKpro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nabil Khan.

Nabil, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My father was a photographer in Pakistan in the 70’s and 80’s. I was not interested in photography while growing up. We moved to the U.S in 1990, I was 13 years old. I was into arts and video games. After high school, I wanted to do animation, so I went to the Art Institute of Atlanta. I got my bachelor’s in 3d animation in 2001. I developed an interest in photography while I was in college because photography was one of the required courses. Shortly after graduating, I bought my first DSLR and started taking photos for fun.

At the same time, I started working for a magazine company doing photo editing for covers. I worked there for 10 years until the company was sold and our department was laid off. At that time I wanted to do something that I was passionate about and something I believe I was going to be great at….. and that was photography.

I used whatever saving I had to upgrade my equipment. New camera, lenses, lighting and few other essentials to get started. I started to advertise and pass out my business cards to everyone in our area and community. I started getting small parties to get comfortable with the whole thing. Then I did my first wedding for next to nothing. When people saw the results of my work, calls started coming in.

Now I am almost 2 years in and things are going great. I have build a team of photographers and videographers who are the best in what they do and help me cover big events where multiple people are required to cover the event. We are doing 3 to 4 events a month and getting busier by the day. Next month we have 10 events lined up already.

Getting laid off from my job was actually a big factor of me pursuing this dream of mine. I would have never pushed myself this hard if I was still working my regular job. I’m glad that photography has giving me a great way to support my family and give me so much joy at the same time.

Has it been a smooth road?
For me, it’s actually been fairly smooth. The struggles would be trying to achieve the very top notch quality with equipment that is not professional grade, but my extensive background in photo retouch helped me a lot. I was able to create a great quality of work. It just took a lot longer to achieve in post-production. Equipment is so expensive, and I was only able to upgrade gradually. As more events I did, the better stuff I was able to get.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with MNKpro – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We provide high-quality photo and video coverage to any event. We have a team of 5 people who are very good at what they do. All of our post-production work is done in-house here in Atlanta, nothing is outsourced. I am very proud of the fact that we offer our clients in person meeting whenever they want. Our clients stop by and see how their work is being worked on and give their feedback. The thing I hear most about our finished product is that it looks so good without looking fake.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The thing I love about Atlanta is diversity. There are so many cultures and people from all walks of life. I also love that we get all the seasons, which is great for photography. The only thing I don’t like would have to be the traffic, and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one. If the photoshoot is in downtown and on a weekday, it’s nearly impossible to make it there on time, unless you leave super early.
