Life & Work with Tony and Katrina Magby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony and Katrina Magby. Them and their team share their story with us below:

We are a family-owned and operated business. We are also a husband and wife team. We started our Rental Business in 2016 after we were both laid off from our corporate jobs. Tony was a Project Manager for Cisco Systems and Katrina was an Insurance Agent for American Family Insurance. We both had a background in Management, so we decided to use our skills that we acquired in Corporate America towards a business for ourselves. After driving to Buford Highway to rent tables and chairs, we decided to research the rental business. We discovered that there were not any rental companies in our nearby area. We decided the rental business was the way to go. Katrina attended Emory to obtain an Event Planning Certification to understand the business. We began taking several classes to educate ourselves regarding entrepreneurship and the rental business. We started our business renting tents, tables, chairs and linens. Working together has been a very rewarding experience that enables us to learn new things about business and each other daily. Providing our customers with top-notch service and hearing them share their stories about their milestone events we provided service for gives us a reason to put in the detailed effort to make every event perfect. Rent The Occasion provides flexible employment opportunities for students and adults in our community that give them an up close and personal view of what it takes to be an entrepreneur in 2022.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
We have had several bumps in the road. We delivered items, installed tents, ironed linens and anything else that needed to be done within our business for the first two years. Our son and daughter helped when they could. We soon realized that we could not perform every duty in our business and be successful. Initially, we operated our business out of our home and the HOA reported our business to Gwinnett County Code Enforcement. We had to move our business into a storage unit. During this time, we were able to hire some wonderful employees, a few who are still with us. In 2020, we moved into our first warehouse and immediately COVID hit America. We held onto our faith, said a prayer and continued our business by the grace of God. We have recently moved into our second warehouse and we are continuing to hold steadfast to our faith, and stay prayerful and continue our growth path of our business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a family-owned and operated Party and Event Rental Company. We specialize in an array of rental items which includes; tents, tables, chairs, linens, event furniture and much more. We work closely with our customers to find creative and innovative ideas to make their vision of their event come to light. Rent The Occasion provides our customers with first-rate customer service accompanied by superior quality products.

We are most proud of starting our business organically, building trust and relationships with our customers and providing top-notch service to our clients.

What sets us apart from others is that we are a husband and wife team working together to be successful and to build a business to pass along to our children and their children.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson we have learned is that entrepreneurship requires perseverance. Tony is a Marine and we live by the unofficial slogan of the Marine Corps which is, “Improvise, adapt and overcome.” This journey continues to bring us closer as a couple, business partners, and parents.
