Today we’d like to introduce you to Trae Morris.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
First off, thank you for reaching out to get an update on my journey. Quite a few things have changed since the last time I spoke with you guys. This year makes seven years that I’ve been in Atlanta, and it’s been a well-rounded and rewarding few years. I’ve been an entertainer professionally now for eight years. I started in Charleston in 2014 under vHIZions Management. In 2015, I relocated to Atlanta to pursue more opportunities.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The further I got into this journey, it’s been an up and down kind of situation. Financially, for any independent artist, unless you’re close to or over six figures professionally, is going to be the top 3 of the most difficult parts. Learning to differentiate between who my friends are verses who my fans are because they aren’t always the same. You have to learn to treat your friends like FRIENDS and not expect them to behave like fans. They can’t come to every show, every appearance, etc. They might not repost everything you do. It doesn’t mean they aren’t your friends. It’s a balance. Trust your gut. Every opportunity isn’t one you should say yes to. Make sure the yes is for your growth, doesn’t question or compromise your character and improves who you are as an artist.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an entertainer all the way around. Since the last time, we spoke quite a few things have changed. I’ve appeared in P-Valley on STARZ, American Soul SII on BET, among a few other projects. I’m currently filming the 3rd season of On The Way Up Atlanta, a web reality series which airs on YouTube. I would say it’s a mix. Some people know me from the show which leads them to my music and other endeavors and for others, it’s the other way around because they follow me musically they started watching the show. My debut EP Subconscious debuted #54 iTunes R&B soul behind Heaux Tales which debuted #1 on the same day and remained top 100 throughout the weekend. I’m proud of that most because I’m independent, no team, no distro just me and those that love my music. My sound sets me apart from others because people love the raspy grit of my voice which has a current sound but also a throwback to traditional R&B that we all love. I’m versatile musically tho I can sing anything but the traditional sound is where I win vocally.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Patience. When I turned 30. It’s like a switch went off and I stopped feeling as if I was going to run out of time. It’s ok to take my time and what is for me is going to meet me in divine alignment. I don’t do anything that doesn’t feel right and I do not rush myself. My best work is produced when I allow it to just happen.
