Today we’d like to introduce you to Tianxing Xu.
Hi Tianxing, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Shanghai, China, and when I graduated from college I decided to move to the United States to continue my studies in fine arts. Now as a visual artist and fine art graduate student. I wouldn’t think too much about what career stage I’m in. For me, it’s just going to the studio every day and creating. Somehow that’s all that matters.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are definitely difficulties and challenges, but I think the difficulties will be there whether I am engaged in what I am doing now or not. Many people will de-emphasize their skin color, gender, class, etc. Everyone has their own strengths and difficulties, and many times those are the two sides of the coin.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The main thing I need to do now is to finish my graduate studies, but it doesn’t stop me from trying things as an artist. Easy to say, create, exhibit, and hopefully support yourself in some way. But you can’t apply for a job and get a steady paycheck like the rest of the people. But I don’t think there’s anything special and proud about that. Like any other career, the artist is just a life choice, after which it requires a lot of patience and hard work.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I’m sorry to say that I’m just starting out, or that everyone is just starting out on their journey. If I have to say it, it’s about choosing something you really love.
