Meet Kelsey Scott of Legacy Trucking Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Scott.

Hi Kelsey, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The transportation industry was nowhere on my radar until I saw a post on Instagram from Alix Good Energy. I was 36 weeks pregnant with my second son and my husband and myself were looking for more passive businesses to invest in. I was in corporate America and didn’t really enjoy it which caused me to dip into a slight depression. I just wanted to be with my babies. We met with Alix at his office and signed up for his program. That night, 12/31/18 we got our LLC and began to learn more about the industry. We took steps and made a large 5 figure investment into starting our own trucking company which included the registration costs and equipment, amongst other things. We had a tough time. Although we took the program there was still A LOT that we just didn’t know. The volatility of the government and the supply chain and also the magnitude of how regulated the industry really was. We went through drivers, spent thousands on breakdowns and had several safety issues.

By the grace of God, I was pushed to just figure it out. I started diving deeper into compliance and the federal regulations and realized there were a lot of people like me that jumped into this to get money fast but didn’t understand the business side. I started Legacy Trucking Consulting in August 2020 just three months before I had my daughter and it really birthed something in me. I remember spending hours just doing market research or reviewing different safety cases and going down a rabbit hole and just thinking, I can really help with this. We specialize in Safety and Compliance and helping companies run their business like a business. We manage right at 50 trucking companies now, have assisted over 300 clients with their compliance needs, have started a program to educate individuals on compliance and have students that have since started their own business. We also within the next couple of months will be the first black female-owned company to launch a cloud-based compliance software in the transportation industry. We work with other industry professionals to offer our services to their clients to increase their business value.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. I singlehandedly built my company from the ground up. I was still in corporate America. I didn’t leave until Sept 24th, 2021, so I literally was working from home due to COVID for corporate, which raising three children at home, all under the age of five at that time, and serving my clients to the best of my ability. I am just feeling comfortable with hiring others and trusting them with my clients and business. The transportation industry can be very cutthroat and someone might come to you for mentorship and try to take your entire business and clientele. Having the actual trucking company and equipment was also very stressful. A lot of people don’t know that I closed down that side of my business. It would take me into literal panic attacks and so much unexpected debt. I would always question God like why are you taking us through this? And now I understand that when he birthed Legacy inside of me and pushed it out into the world, that everything we went through in our trucking company was not in vain.

We’ve been impressed with Legacy Trucking Consulting LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Legacy Trucking Consulting LLC is my 4th child, literally. It is a full-service compliance firm that specializes in safety and compliance. Our mission is for our clients to not be one of the more than 80% of trucking companies that go out of business each year. Our value we give, customer service and personable nature definitely set us apart from others. I hear that A LOT. Although I try to keep it very cute and professional, at the end of the day, I’m a wife and a mama so I can only be myself. A lot of my clients respect me because I do SO MUCH, but I still handle business! I give everyone 110%. I think that comes from my military background as a “military brat” and also one who served myself, I’m BIG on respect and service. I’ve never had to my knowledge any negative reviews and my company or services, we have 5 stars period. I won’t accept anything less. That is what I am most proud of brand-wise and also definitely the education. I almost feel like a counselor at times like I am definitely a problem solver for a lot of clients.

For instance, when you start a trucking company and actually apply for your operating authority, which essentially lets you operate outside of your own state, you are agreeing to follow the regulations, receive random inspections and also receive government audits on your business. You have to have your stuff in ORDER! So when clients come to me and they don’t, I give them very simple things they can do that are very cost-effective and tell them WHY they need it and how to maintain it. I would help people for free all day! As far as our services, we have so many to offer. From a full trucking company setup to managing companies’ compliance to help them properly and professionally hire their drivers to disputing violations and citations received. I mean really do it all within our respected expertise.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I am an avid reader. I have the hardest time just turning my brain off. So I love a book I can kind of just lose myself in. I have a whole host of different types of books on my phone and in my office from personal development to fiction. Journalling really helps me as well. Especially being someone who has dealt with mental health issues from depression to anxiety and post-partum, journaling, prayer and the Word of God truly got me through an extremely rough season in my life. So I try and do that often as well.
