Conversations with Octavia Traylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Octavia Traylor.

Hi Octavia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an up-and-coming wardrobe stylist, and my business is Stylish Shades By Tavia, LLC. I have an eye for fashion, and I’m a trendsetter. I was born and raised on the Westside of Atlanta, Bankhead, to be exact. I always knew since a little girl that my fashion sense was unique. I use to watch my mother and her friends get dolled up, and I was very intrigued at a young age. As I got older, I knew I wanted to test the fashion guidelines by being bold, creative, and confident with the aspirations of being a trendsetter instead of a trend trailer. I knew I had a talent for putting looks together. Over the years, random people would comment on my styles, and many would think I styled professionally. Occasionally, I would even be asked to style someone after giving it some serious thought and many requests. I decide to take this stylist idea more seriously.

I wear clothes; I don’t allow clothes to wear me!

To me, fashion is Art; it’s so many different components and things you can add or take away to create the perfect statement piece. It’s being able to express yourself, love yourself, and feel beautiful while walking around strutting your confidence with a fantastic outfit. Fashion is my happiness, the thing I do without even trying. I want to become a brand ambassador for clothing brands, get my styles out there, and see what the world offers in the fashion industry. I want to be that boss chick because I am the Boss.Lady.Tavi and I am not giving up.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a single mother and raising two kids sometimes makes it very hard. Juggling all that I do for them while working and pursuing my dreams can be challenging. I suffered a miscarriage almost two years ago, which took me down a dark path; I felt defeated and lost myself. Instead of sinking further into depression, I had to pull myself out of that dark place and turn that energy into positivity. Fashion helps with that. So, I took a nose-dive into my wardrobe styling. Also, living in this new generation could be a struggle in this social media era. The world could be judgmental; it feels like people can say anything without caring how it may affect someone else. I had to learn to get into a place where I didn’t care what other people said about me. I have to ride for myself and be my biggest cheerleader, even when times get hard. Yes, I have had my fair share of ups and down, but I try to remember the bigger picture and why I spend so much time on my passions. I know that I can help and inspire others to feel beautiful and confident and to never give up on their dreams, no matter how many times they have to start over.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work as a Court Associate for Fulton County in the Superior and Magistrate Courts. I started working at Fulton County in 2016. I took a break last year and wanted to find my true passion; now I am back, though I’m in a different department. I’m genuinely passionate about fashion, helping people realize they don’t need to break the bank to look like money. Styling is my actual work; it’s art and therapy all in one. A nice outfit and a simple compliment could change your day, week, and mood.

Everything starts with confidence; you look good, and you feel good. I know there is a plan for my life, and I have a calling to make people feel better about themselves worldwide through fashion. Being out and about getting stopped, strangers wondering who I am or if I’m a fashion designer is a great feeling. It Lets me know my styles are being admired and appreciated. Life keeps throwing me lemons, and I keep making lemonade; I’m very proud of my resilience. My children keep me focused, and I want to be able to provide for them, give them the world, and more.

Moreover, I am tired of struggling; eventually, focusing on my craft will pay off. I trust in myself, and the feedback I receive on my styles and creativity is phenomenal. My fashion senses are bold, confident, sexy, cool, and wild, which sets me apart from the rest.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I have learned to put more time and energy into my business, going hard toward my goals. The pandemic showed me that at any given moment, you could be terminated, or the company could stop functioning altogether. So if anything, the crisis made me realize I needed to take my dreams more seriously and be a self-made boss.
