Today we’d like to introduce you to Breana Davis.
Hi Breana, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I felt the “call to heal” at a very young age. My younger brother suffered from asthma in childhood, and I would spend days looking into ways that I could help him heal and breathe better. I also suffered from eczema as a child, and I knew that there had to be a way to actually HEAL the eczema instead of masking the symptoms with creams and ointments.
This early calling set me on the path to becoming a doctor. After graduating high school, I set off to undergrad with a pre-med major. During school, I also worked as a medical scribe at the Emory University Hospital emergency department. I learned so many things through this work, but there always felt like something in the conventional medical sector was missing; no one was focusing on actually healing the patients’ illnesses, the focus was always on symptom management. There was a clear disconnect between what I was seeing daily and what I knew to be my own personal values regarding health and healing. It wasn’t until I look a Complimentary and Alternative Therapies elective that I felt that original calling again.
After spending some soul-searching time post-graduation, I decided to look deeper into the different types of medicine, which led me to Naturopathic Medicine. That’s where I found the source of my calling!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh, absolutely not! I graduated from medical school smack in the middle of a global pandemic; it was pandemonium! Naturopathic medicine is very much an entrepreneurial field, and attempting to start a practice in 2020 definitely came with its challenges.
Most of what I had learned about gaining exposure and getting business involved in-person communication; speaking at events, showing up to pop-up markets and such. During Covid, none of that stuff was happening. I had to quickly adjust to the changes around me and develop an online strategy for marketing and helping my community. This was (and still is) hard for me because of my love-hate relationship with social media, lol.
Another major struggle is coming up with financial capital to continue pursuing the formation of a successful practice. As we all know, it takes money to make money. Coming out of school with significant debt and minimal job prospects, I had to really put my nose to the grindstone to gain access to funds that would push me further toward reaching my goals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Dr. Bree, ND offers holistic healthcare services, with emphasis on skincare for people of color and women’s health specifically holistic fertility and childbirth. I’m also a full-spectrum doula and offer both in-person and virtual doula services for birthing humans.
I started my practice in August of 2020 in the middle of the pandemic, and in some ways, I’m still starting my business. I’m always learning new things and creating new offerings for my patients/clients. Currently, I’m working on forming my own natural skincare line as well as an online program to help people heal from long-term skin conditions/issues.
Working with me includes an in-depth discussion of your health history, including physical, mental, and emotional concerns. I will ask clarifying questions and request recent labwork or imaging if you have it to provide. You will leave your first visit having felt heard, and I will provide a list of functional labs which will help us find the root cause of your health concerns and work together to get your health on track! I work to give the patients back the autonomy of their health; I provide the education but THEY DO THE WORK.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The never-ceasing support of my parents has meant the world to me. My loving boyfriend has been a source of strength and support throughout my medical school journey and beyond. My med school chums who keep in touch and provide wisdom and inspiration on days when things seem rough.
A special appreciation goes out to my mentors Dr. Maurice Werness, Dr. Michael Traub, Dr. Jonci Jensen, and Drs. Sean and Sarah Hesler of Naturopaths Without Borders; you all saw my passion for healing and helped to mold me into the healer that I am today. I couldn’t have achieved any of this without your support!
