Today we’d like to introduce you to Cecilia Cheeks. Them and their team share their story with us below:
As a champion for and proven leader in strategic communication and marketing, Cecilia leads as CEO with nearly 30 years of industry experience.
Before establishing the agency, Cecilia previously served as the first-ever vice president of Communications and Community Relations at one of the largest private equity firms, director of Communications, Business Marketing and Public Engagement for one of the biggest public housing agencies and senior manager of Corporate Communications for America’s largest wireless technology leader. In these roles, she successfully built and developed the organizational or divisional Communication function and structure including its team members, plan, budget and process followed by execution to plan that met or exceeded projections.
In addition, Cecilia served in various PR leadership roles throughout her career in technology, telecommunications, financial services and healthcare. While attending Valdosta State University, she also served as a media relations specialist during the 1992 U. S. Presidential elections on behalf of the 42nd President of the United States William Jefferson Clinton.
Cecilia is a member of the Georgia Chapter of Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), Atlanta Press Club and the Black Public Relations Society of Atlanta (BPRSA).
As an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a charter member of the Greater Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Cecilia stays active in the community.
She is also a proud mom of two sons and a daughter. She is known to go on long runs in prep for marathons, read good mystery novels for bookclub, cycle on the open road for charity, travel to places faraway and help others overcome challenges by lending her support to leadership development opportunities, civil and human rights, education and the arts.
She earned an MBA from Clark Atlanta University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Speech Communications/Public Relations from Valdosta State University.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The entrepreneurial road has been smoother than I expected. I have heard how difficult it is to be a business owner so I was prepared for the impending difficulty. And while starting a business is a major, long-term commitment, I didn’t account for my entrepreneurial work ethic as an employee. I worked day and night in the beginning setting up the LLC, building the new company contact list, finding office space and securing funding.
Some of the struggles include determining a growth strategy. Grow and build or build and grow. Finding the right staff has also been a challenge as Cecintel Public Relations is a specialized PR firm that serves technical or regulated client industries.
