Today we’d like to introduce you to Dï Thomas.
Hi Dï, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out taking photos on my phone for fun. My friends would always tell me that I had a creative eye, but I didn’t really take it seriously at first. I filmed my first short film with my phone and I got a lot of feedback that the viewers wanted to see more. Eventually, I started filming with an actual camera and I was fascinated with the “photos in motion” storytelling concept. Being able to visually tell a story behind the lens eventually led me to writing my own stories to bring to life. If I could see it, then I could film it. That way of thinking led me to filming a series in Paris, France and in various other cities. After writing, directing, and filming my own stories I started focusing primarily on directing. I started directing other projects for other people which led me back to writing and creating my own stories again.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road and at times it still isn’t. The type of content and stories that I choose to tell aren’t always the most “accepted” or popular. I remember when I first started creating my own stories, I was asked to submit one of my films for a networking-type viewing. I wanted to submit my short film on Trans Suicide Awareness and I was told that the audience may not be ready for that type of content. Initially, it was discouraging and I questioned a lot of things in regard to the film community. That same short film had an amazing film festival run and received a lot of positive feedback. It was at a film festival in Los Angeles where I received a lot of positive feedback and encouragement to keep telling those stories because it was needed. I realized then that not everyone will always like what I create, but for that to not stop me. If I can make a difference in one person’s life whether it is to help make them feel seen or to educate someone on a topic, then my film has served its purpose.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an award-winning international filmmaker, director, screenwriter, and producer based in Atlanta, Georgia. At an early age, I developed a love for visual art and silent films. I creatively use my platform to create content that will give those that lack representation a voice to be heard and seen. My signature unique artistic vision distinguishes my work from the norm. I enjoy finding the beauty in things that most overlook, especially helping others to find the beauty within themselves. Whether it be through photography or directing them to deliver a scene with emotions that they did not know they had within.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like best about our city is that there are options for everything from food to the arts. You can always find something to do, new and old. Which is also part of what I like least about our city, traffic.
