Exploring Life & Business with Kevin Kersee of Kersee Chiro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Kersee.

Hi Kevin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story is similar to many others especially here in Atlanta. Young gay black boy grows up with big dreams but with no way of knowing how to accomplish them. Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, I moved to Atlanta in 2013 to start my path of becoming a chiropractor. Little did I know this path would take me through many ups and downs not only academically but also personally. I after coming out, I was able to finally start to realize all that I can bring to my community, specifically the forgotten gay black/POC community. After working for different companies, I have now decided that I want to dedicate time to my own chiropractic practice located in the heart of my community. I opened Kersee Chiro on October 1, 2022, and now look forward to serving in any way I can. Moving forward, I plan to make connections with other LGBTQIA+ and minority healthcare providers to educate and care for those that do not have access to providers that understand them. I specialize in pain relief, sports performance, and helping people achieve optimal health.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I was once told a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor. I guess that can be applied to the road as well. Being black in America is a struggle in itself. Being a black man adds another layer to that. Then you add identifying as gay to the roster and the statistics of being a happy, healthy, and successful individual dramatically decrease. I believe I have always lived a blessed life. Part of my childhood involved being raised by a single, strong, black mother that did everything within her power to raise me and my siblings. I know that God’s favor was always upon us because I was blessed to have parents who loved me and family and friends that always supported me, but internal struggles can be some of the hardest battles you will ever fight. Getting to the point in which not only I am able to truly love myself but also give to and receive love from others was a long and bumpy road. Some people joined me along for the ride, and others were lost, but I am so glad I made the journey. I am now in a loving relationship with a man that adores me and have family and friends that only wish the best for me. I am Happy.

I am most proud that I get to relate to people on a level that they feel comfortable. I am the type of doctor that will listen to you and not impose judgment or feelings on you, instead work with you to figure out a plan that works for you. Patients want to feel heard and respected, and that is my priority. Being able to serve the gay and black communities is near to my heart. Chiropractic is not a common experience that many people are aware of or have had the chance in the past, but I want to change that. My goal is to let everyone know that much of what many people seek in a healthcare provider can be found within chiropractic. I do not believe it is the cure for all things, but I firmly trust that a collaborative healthcare effort that includes chiropractic can and would produce better outcomes.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson has been to be myself and I will attract those that are meant for me. I try every day to show the most authentic version of myself, and I want my future patients to feel comfortable to do the same. We are all special and unique and no matter who you are, chiropractic can be a great addition to your wellness routine. Chiropractic care has long been associated with car accidents, slips, and falls, but I want people to understand that it can provide so much more than that. Benefits such as increased energy, better posture, better sleep, less overall pain, improved immunity are all possible.
