Today we’d like to introduce you to Dez Johnson.
Hi Dez, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I played football for the first 25 years of my life. I actually played all sports but football took over after high school. I’m a father of two magnificent sons (15 and 7). Originally I’m from Mobile, Alabama, but I’ve been in Atlanta for about 16 years. I attended Clark Atlanta University and bounced around a couple of professional teams and leagues shortly after college. I retired from football at the age of 26. This was a game that I had grown emotionally attached too, so when I couldn’t play anymore, I had no idea what was next. I went back to the only place I felt comfortable, the gym. Most people know me from working in high-end fitness facilities throughout Atlanta. I’ve developed relationships with many influential people from all over the world, including some of the world’s best athletes. So, two years ago, I decided to build The Dauphin Sports Agency. I wanted to help young athletes transition into their pro careers by offering representation and mentorship. Football saved my life, and I’m sure there are many athletes out there that feel the same. We are here for them!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being independent, I’m not bankrolled by a big agency. I don’t have that type of support. What I do have is a good heart and pure intentions for all of my athletes. Their training and coaching come from my budget. It’s definitely a high risk, but I feel that the reward is so much greater. The biggest obstacle is making sure that we understand the needs of each of our athletes. They all need something different. Each of them has a unique journey that requires a specific type of attention. Learning what that is and nurturing it can be difficult at times. It’s definitely worth the swing though, lol.
“There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs.”
As you know, we’re big fans of The Dauphin Sports Agency. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am from Mobile, Al. For those who know, my hometown is rich in French and Creole culture. The word “Dauphin” is a French term meaning heir to the throne, or the next one up. That’s how we feel about our athletes.
We are excited about building a platform geared towards those Division 1, 2, and 3 guys who may not get a fair shot at the next level. We give them opportunities to swing at NIL deals. We also market them to other professional leagues to make them more desirable for NFL clubs. We are always working on something to package our players, that’s for sure!
This is an independent Sports Agency aimed at athletes with a story. We represent the underdogs and give them an opportunity to chase their dreams as a professional. NFL, CFL, USFL.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I strongly believe that Luck is where preparation meets opportunity. I’m willing to provide opportunities for my guys as long as they are willing to prepare properly. I have definitely been blessed with a wonderful career in the fitness industry. I’ve learned so much about the business and about my own capabilities. If Luck has played a role in my career, I believe that it’s come in the form of networking. I have an amazing group of supporters and mentors that help me keep my organization aligned with my core principles. You need those types of people around you. I’m thankful for them. They know who they are.
