Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianne McMullan.
Brianne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I actually started my professional life as a kindergarten and first grade teacher. I always knew, I would be a teacher because of my love for children and that was my natural path through college. Upon graduation, I was engaged to my now, husband and I began planning a wedding of my own. I quickly realized, I had a knack for logistics and an eye for design and after my own wedding, I landed an amazing job as an associate coordinator with an existing event planning company in Atlanta.
I was teaching and planning weddings at the same time and I was busier than I could keep up with. I knew that something had to give and so, I decided to give wedding planning my full focus and left the classroom. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right choice for me.
Now, I am in my fourth year as a wedding and event planner and I have started a successful business (something I never could have predicted that I would do). Owning an event planning company isn’t all flowers and flowy gowns! Learning the ins and outs of business ownership has been a special challenge all its own and it has caused me to feel strong ownership over and pride for the work I do. Our team grew by one last year and now, I have an amazing associate named, Kellie who works with me. I couldn’t be more excited to wake up and work every day.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I started my business, I was really skilled at crafting floor plans and timelines, but I had never dipped my toes in all of the skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur. I have had to learn loads about finances, marketing, advertising, sales, etc. as I have worked on growing the business and serving our clients well. I invested heavily in education in the first year by going to workshops and bringing on a business coach, and I think those investments have definitely paid off for me.
I think the biggest challenge of owning a business is being alone. You don’t have anyone to bounce ideas off of or to consult with when things are hard. Our recent growth has helped with this, but building a strong network of other business owners has been crucial for my success and sanity! I feel I have great relationships with many other business owners in this industry and it is so refreshing to be able to talk to other folks who have similar struggles and successes as you.
Overall, every struggle I face in owning this business is worth it. I absolutely love the work I do and the couples I serve, and it is so rewarding to watch something I have built grow and grow!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Brianne McMullan Events – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a wedding planning and design company that services the Southeast. We specialize in working with couples who like to take risks with their design and who are looking to incorporate custom touches throughout their big day. We also pride ourselves on being trusted friends who can help take the stress and confusion out of the wedding planning process. We offer a variety of planning, design and coordination packages.
We are proud to have our work featured on many prominent wedding blogs and publications such as Southern Weddings, The Knot, and Borrowed and Blue, among others! In 2017, we were nominated for the best planner category in the Southern Weddings Best of the South Awards and we have earned the Best of Weddings award on The Knot and the Couple’s Choice Award on Wedding Wire.
While we are very proud and honored to receive this recognition from our peers and our couples, we are most proud at the end of each wedding day, when we get to hug our couples goodbye after their receptions. Seeing them exploding with happiness after the best day of their lives is a feeling that is unmatched. We love seeing all of our hard work come to life and serving our couples well.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are welcoming a new little team member this year – baby McMullan is due in July of 2018. As I learn to juggle motherhood with business ownership, I hope to continue to serve our couples and improve our processes and practices. I hope that motherhood gives me a new lense through which I will see our clients and that it will only make me a stronger planner and business owner. I also hope to grow our team within the year and bring on a new associate for our team!
