Rising Stars: Meet Marcus Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Taylor.

Hi Marcus, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story starts with my shoulder injury at my job. I was told that because of my health at the time, they were concerned if I would live if they put me under.

I had a collection of poems at that point, close to 20 years worth. From then on, I decided that I needed to publish my poetry book. That eventually led me to spoken word.

The spoken word scene in Atlanta has provided many opportunities but I felt I could produce shows for talent that hardly get a spotlight.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have produced two books and a few chapbooks. I think I have never sold even a 100 between all of them. But MistaFunn told me that is more important that you get the book in people’s hand rather than get their money in your hand so I have given away books and that gives me more joy than a sale.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Christian Content Creator. I am most known as a writer of poetry that does spoken word. The last few years, I have focused on producing showcases for upcoming artists.

I produced a one-man show, Being Single is Cool and I produced a stage play in 2018 that I had been wanting to get on stage since 2005, Measure of a Man.

Outside of my eyes, I think I have a willingness to learn from others and sharpen my skills no matter how experienced I get.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Be teachable. Go to places ready to listen instead ready to share your knowledge and expertise. Look for people that are slow to speak also.

I observe the room and watch & listen for details.
