Today we’d like to introduce you to Rama Kazi.
Hi Rama, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in Atlanta and raised in Lawrenceville, around Surrey Hill not far from Sugarloaf Mills.
My mother is Black and my father is Brown so I grew up with cousins and doctors around.
I was known as the hard-workin’ smart person destined to be a heart surgeon.
But I was also a Hip Hop purist that enjoyed hearing years of wisdom from top-tier lyricism.
It started with piano lessons and performing in churches to sampling sessions and recording some verses.
See I love music passionately as it was natural to me and I even knew what kind of rapper I’d be.
But medicine was a proven route for moving out and purchasing an affluent house, plus I enjoyed the straight-A student clout.
I attended two research colleges to be a neurologist but years of rough patches, tough classes, and a C plus average overshadowed my accomplishments.
So I just kept applying my best efforts in rectifying my test records instead of trying to assess whether I was being pushed by stress or pleasure.
Fast-forward to 2019 when I was still a Gwinnett commuter sitting at a desk computer.
My job as a tech recruiter felt like my best maneuver for a better future.
One day I listened to Lagaan and had a vision of a song that was a mixture of my mom and dad.
I called up my dawg ANiMAL and we made “Bollywood Swing”.
The sync money showed me that we got a good thing.
I decided on a rebrand to be known as Rama Kazi, which blended my cultures like a Folger’s pot of coffee.
We released my first album that was made through Logic.
And I’ve been focused on this path since that debut project.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve definitely been through a strenuous struggle and continued to hustle.
Until those experiences kept me genuine and humble.
My younger self-confidence was mainly felt through wealth, accomplishments and someone else’s compliments. While my ego was driven by comparing myself to how other people were living.
I was smart and entitled but when my hardships started, I got caught in a karmic cycle.
My need for validation through chasing star power eventually collapsed like a wet card tower.
When my first route didn’t work out, it felt like I was caught in a traffic jam.
At my lowest point, I had no job or cash in hand and no thought of a backup plan.
Through the constant redirection, my thoughts would be depressing because
I didn’t want to see the lesson.
I decided to force it and go corporate but my remorse was still enormous.
My heart was nowhere to be found, including in my performance.
But when I started music and could abnegate that whole phase.
My passion in the art was stronger even through the slow days.
I was fine with dropping songs even if there was no praise.
But every now and then I seem to catch myself in old ways.
Measuring myself against my friends by sharing accolades.
Jealous of the artists who got started at just half my age.
Wishing Complex found my music and I could post about it.
Just to prove to others that there were results around it.
But that’s unhealthy for the psyche and can manifest in loss.
Especially when you can’t address the cause.
Because I’ve spiraled down from higher ground when I feel a relapse coming.
I check my vision board again and tell myself “we lack nothing!”
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in songwriting and making great music. I can describe a story vividly and take you straight through it.
I’m a native creative that experiments with genre-blending song bending
But still encapsulates lyricism beyond comprehending.
I’m proud of Trust The Process and even just the progress.
My accolades resulted from how much I love my projects.
From radio to magazine and festival stages.
I try to make my music with respect to all ages.
If you were to check my Spotify’s top listens.
It’s “From Tha Nawfside, With Love”, “Bollywood Swing” and “Hot Chicken”.
Known to be intelligent and purposeful when writing.
The metaphors are deep but all my verses are exciting.
My melodies are infectious and my style is eclectic.
My allegories and rhyme schemes will always be expected.
Aside from music, I teach neuroscience for children.
To instill them with a built-in sense of peace through AREACH.
I also run a blog called Decyphering Dope.
That looks at Hip-Hop through a neuroscientist’s scope.
But if there’s one more thing I want my audience to know.
My music is best live, come see Rama Kazi in a show!
